Unknown SimplePie plugin

Hi,

I’m getting warnings:

error_log

/wp-includes/SimplePie/error_log Unknown file in WordPress core

error_log

/wp-includes/SimplePie/Cache/error_log Unknown file in WordPress core

I don’t use this plugin, so it’s alarmed me somewhat. Any comments or ideas around it?

    Hello gary,

SimplePie is used by WordPress core for parsing RSS & Atom feeds. That is not separate plugin, that is part of WordPress, so you should not remove it.

It looks like it is alerting you about error log file that is there and it should not be. I checked my installation are there is no error logs in those. Can you see what type of errors are there?

    kind regards,

    Kasia

    Hi Gary

Would you please make sure you have the file – /wp-includes/class-simplepie.php? It seems some files are missing in core. In that case, you can download wordpress from wordpress.org, extract, use a FTP client like filezilla to upload and overwrite wp-includes folder.

Let me know if it solved the issue.

    Have a good day!

    Cheers

    Ash

    Hi Gary,

assuming updating to the latest version of WP files is automatically safe etc? I have never updated a Multisite WordPress install before…

Yes, overwriting the files using FTP shouldn’t cause any harm. What it’ll do is, replace the already existing files with the new ones, and if there is any missing files it’ll be added into it’s proper location, and hence it should resolve your current issue.

Please do note that, you’ll only have to copy, and overwrite the /wp-includes folder. The mentioned changes, wouldn’t affect your current configuration in any way.

However, if you are looking to take a backup, you could make use of Snapshot Pro plugin.

    Kind Regards,

    Nithin

    Hi Gary,

Hope you are doing good today.

Thank you for sending the FTP credentials, but I’m afraid it doesn’t work. The access gets stucks at Retrieving directory listing…, and ultimately timing out. I tried increasing the the Timeout seconds in my system, but I’m still no able to connect. I asked one of my colleagues to check, and even he’s getting the same result.

Could you please check your credentials, and correct these out for us, so that we could test this. You can send the credentials, as you have done before through email, and will make sure to get back to you asap.

    Kind Regards,

    Nithin

    Hi Gary,

Hope you are doing good today.

I was able to login using the FTP credentials, and it’s working fine, thank you. I checked your files, and I wasn’t able to find any issues as mentioned in the log files, and the latest logs were dated back to nov 6. To be sure, I re-uploaded the files related to /wp-includes folder.

Once done, I wasn’t able to notice any error_log files being generated, and Defender scan doesn’t seem to pick any related error_logs as mentioned above, and it seems to work fine.

However, you are running WordPress v 4.5.2, would recommend you to update it to the latest version, or at least to v 4.5.4(security fix). The latest version contains many security fixes, and would highly recommend you to update your install.
