Are WordPress Image Gallery Blocks SEO Friendly?

Hi, I am trying to re-work my images for SEO content (and faster loading) – just wanted to check if the “gallery” block in WP is SEO friendly (i.e. will search engines pick up my image file names, title tags and alt descriptions etc if I insert my images into a WordPress block GALLERY (vs. image?)
Thanks heaps guys.

    Hey there Kristen !
I hope you are having a great day!

Nahid here, a staff member of the WPMU DEV Support team and also a core member of the block-editor (Gutenberg) project development team. I’ve personally worked on the gallery block and I’d like to assure you that the image block has no added advantage over the gallery block in terms of SEO. That is, from an SEO point of view, they are practically the same.

If you take a closer look at the source code, you’ll be able to notice that the gallery block adds all the meta details within the image, i.e. the file name, title, ALT description, etc. (if provided), in the same way like it does for the image block. The only difference is the markup structure that surrounds the image, which doesn’t take part in SEO. Here’s a screenshot for reference:

Hope this helps. Please let us know if you need any further assistance regarding this. Thanks!
