{"id":136497,"date":"2015-03-24T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-24T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/premium.wpmudev.org\/blog\/?p=136497"},"modified":"2015-03-24T07:49:16","modified_gmt":"2015-03-24T11:49:16","slug":"ios-android-retirement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/ios-android-retirement\/","title":{"rendered":"Retiring and Releasing (for Free) Our WP for iOS and Android Apps"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Eighteen months ago, we introduced WP for iOS and WP for Android, enabling members to build beautiful and professional smartphone apps for WordPress.<\/h2>\n<p>These apps\u00a0have been especially helpful for members who develop client sites or run Multisite networks, as they have been able to provide their clients or users the means to manage their WordPress site using their phone.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"wpdui-pic-right  \">\n<figure id=\"attachment_934747\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-934747\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/allthewpfeatures.png\" alt=\"WP for Android\" width=\"510\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">WP for Android<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, the iOS and Android platforms have changed considerably since we first released these apps.<\/p>\n<p>WP for Android was originally built using Eclipse, which was great at the time, but has since been replaced with Android Studio as the official Android developer tool.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The iOS app, meanwhile, relies on PODS, which has caused issues, and while the app\u00a0works fine with iOS 7, it\u2019s incompatible with recent releases of iOS.<\/p>\n<p>These reasons have made it difficult for us to continue maintaining these apps. After careful consideration, we have decided to retire WP for iOS and WP for Android.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>Both apps\u00a0are now available for free for anyone to download, and include documentation:<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/wp-for-ios-7.zip\" target=\"_blank\">WP for iOS<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/wp-for-android.zip\" target=\"_blank\">WP for Android<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What About Support?<\/h3>\n<p>If you do decide to use these apps, they come \u201cas is.\u201d We\u2019ve updated the documentation to help get you started, but if you use them you do so at your own risk.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"wpdui-pic-left  \">\n<figure id=\"attachment_934747\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-934747\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/completelywhitelabel.png\" alt=\"WP for Android\" width=\"510\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">WP for Android<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In terms of support, if you&#8217;re a WPMU DEV members\u00a0you are never\u00a0on\u00a0your\u00a0own \u2013 we\u2019ve always got your back.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you are not a member, we can only provide limited support and can\u2019t guarantee timely help when you need it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Onward and Upward<\/h3>\n<p>Our focus has, and always will be, on delivering quality plugins\u00a0and themes for WordPress \u2013 not wasting time trying to keep up with the ever changing iOS and Android environment.<\/p>\n<p>Building solid plugins\u00a0is our core business and while we can\u2019t announce anything just now, we look forward to sharing more exciting plugin news in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have any questions about these apps, feel free to ask away in the comments below.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eighteen months ago, we introduced WP for iOS and WP for Android, enabling members to build beautiful and professional smartphone apps for WordPress.
