There are times, however, when you may want to take a site from a multisite network and set it up as a single WordPress site on its own domain.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, we look at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#why\">Why Split a Site from a Multisite Network?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#ehow\">How to Migrate a WordPress Multisite Subsite to a Single WordPress Install<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"why\">Why Split a Subsite From a Multisite Network?<\/h2>\n<p>Here are some of the reasons why you may want to take a site out of a multisite network and set it up as a single WordPress install:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A site may have outgrown the network and needs to have its own space or identity.<\/li>\n<li>You want to have more control over the site and install plugins, themes, or third-party apps that can&#8217;t be added to Multisite or that may require its own server.<\/li>\n<li>Your site isn&#8217;t performing as well as it could and you want to improve its performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you search online, you will find a number of articles and tutorials aimed at showing multisite admins how to migrate a subsite to a single site. These are generally clunky and involve a number of steps like making backups, importing XML files, renaming database tables, making search-replaces via WP-CLI or a plugin, etc.<\/p>\n<p>While this may work fine if you want to <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/moving-wordpress-site-into-multisite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">move a single WordPress site to a Multisite network<\/a>, going the opposite way to split a subsite from a multisite environment and migrate the entire site over to a single WordPress install hosted on its own domain is more challenging.<\/p>\n<p>Is there a simpler and easier way to automate this process&#8211;maybe just click a button or two&#8211;and have the whole thing done for you?<\/p>\n<p>Sure! In WordPress, we call it a &#8220;plugin.&#8221; ;)<\/p>\n<h2>WordPress Multisite To Single Site Migration With Shipper Plugin<\/h2>\n<p>In version 1.2, Shipper Pro introduced the ability to migrate a subsite from a multisite network to a single site. This eliminates all the &#8220;clunkiness&#8221; of trying to split and migrate subsites manually.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s go through the migration process step-by-step and show you how easy Shipper does it&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Initial Setup &#8211; Pre-Migration Checklist<\/h3>\n<p>Migrating sites with <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/project\/shipper-pro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shipper<\/a> is so easy. Shipper works with any host. Just set up your destination site and make sure that the Shipper plugin is installed on both the source (ie, your multisite installation) and destination sites.<\/p>\n<p>Notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>There&#8217;s no need to back up your source site.<\/strong> Our migration method is 100% safe for your source site (i.e. your Multisite installation). We do recommend, however, performing a complete backup of your destination site in case something goes wrong while the system overwrites your destination site&#8217;s files, folders, and database.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re a <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/#trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WPMU DEV member<\/a>, use <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/project\/snapshot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snapshot Pro<\/a> to perform an automatic backup of your entire site to our secure cloud storage (and restore your site in just one click if required).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For this tutorial, I have set up a demo multisite network with three subdirectory subsites on a dedicated server using cPanel and Softaculous.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191705\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191705\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/multisite-demo.png\" alt=\"WordPress Multisite demo\" width=\"600\" height=\"520\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our WordPress Multisite demo site.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Let&#8217;s suppose that we want to split Site 2 away from the Multisite environment and migrate the entire site over to a single WordPress install on its own domain.<\/p>\n<p>This is what our demo site looks like:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191708\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191708\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mu-demo-site-2a.jpg\" alt=\"WordPress subsitedemo frontend.\" width=\"600\" height=\"536\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the WordPress subsite demo we will split from our Multisite network.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our demo Site 2 includes posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, plugins, themes, media, etc. We want to migrate all of this over to a single WordPress install.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191711\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-191711 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mu-dashboard-site-2.png\" alt=\"Demo subsite dashboard\" width=\"600\" height=\"283\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Let&#8217;s migrate everything included in our subsite: all content, media, plugins, themes, etc.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here is our brand new single WordPress installation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191709\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191709\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/new-wp-install.png\" alt=\"New WordPress install.\" width=\"600\" height=\"442\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our new WordPress installation &#8211; this is the destination site.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And here is the dashboard of our brand new WordPress single site.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191712\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-191712 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/new-wp-install-dashboard.png\" alt=\"New WordPress install dashboard.\" width=\"600\" height=\"541\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The dashboard of our brand new WordPress installation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We are now ready to begin the migration process.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how\">How to Migrate a WordPress Multisite Subsite to a Single WordPress Install Using Shipper<\/h2>\n<p>Shipper&#8217;s Multisite to single site migration feature lets you migrate a subsite from your multisite network to a single site installation using the following methods:<\/p>\n<h3>Package Migration<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191978\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191978\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/shipper-dash-package-migration.png\" alt=\"Shipper Dashboard - Package Migration.\" width=\"600\" height=\"730\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shipper Dashboard &#8211; Package Migration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With this method, your website is packaged as a file with an installer application so you can download and transfer your site to the new server using <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/sftp-transfer-files-securely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SFTP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Package Migration lets you create a package of the whole network or one of the subsites. If you package a subsite and then install it on a server, it will be installed as a single site.<\/p>\n<h3>API Migration<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191977\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191977\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/shipper-dash-api-migration.png\" alt=\"Shipper Dashboard - API Migration.\" width=\"600\" height=\"730\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shipper Dashboard &#8211; API Migration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This method provides a one-click automated export\/import function through secure server-to-server communication.<\/p>\n<p>API Migration lets you both export and import a subsite from a network to a single site.<\/p>\n<p>Refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/docs\/wpmu-dev-plugins\/shipper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shipper&#8217;s plugin documentation<\/a> for a detailed step-by-step walkthrough on migrating sites using the above methods.<\/p>\n<h2>Time To Migrate Our Subsite&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>Now that we have covered all of the preliminaries, let&#8217;s migrate our subsite to our new single WordPress install.<\/p>\n<p>As per our earlier pre-migration checklist, you should already have connected both your source and destination sites to The Hub.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191773\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191773\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hub-sites-added.png\" alt=\"The Hub\" width=\"600\" height=\"319\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Make sure that both your source and destination sites are connected to The Hub<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You should also have Shipper already installed on both sites.<\/p>\n<p>On your WordPress Multisite installation, navigate to the Shipper menu.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191774\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191774\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mu-shipper-dashboard.png\" alt=\"WordPress Multisite - Shipper menu.\" width=\"600\" height=\"530\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">WordPress Multisite &#8211; Shipper menu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Method 1. Package Migration<\/h3>\n<p>Let&#8217;s go through the <strong>Package Migration<\/strong> method first. You can select this method from the plugin&#8217;s dashboard or go to <strong>Shipper &gt; Package Migration<\/strong> and click on the Create Package button.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191776\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-191776 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mu-package-migration.png\" alt=\"Shipper - Package Migration\" width=\"600\" height=\"372\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">We&#8217;ll use package migration to move our subsite.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the <strong>Create Package<\/strong> screen, give your package a name, then select <strong>Subsite to Single site<\/strong> as the Package Type and select the subsite you would like to migrate from the <em>Choose Subsite<\/em> dropdown menu.<\/p>\n<p>In this example, we&#8217;ll select &#8220;Site 2&#8221; as the subsite to migrate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191775\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-191775 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mu-create-package.png\" alt=\"Shipper-Create Package for Subsite\" width=\"600\" height=\"807\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Select your subsite from the dropdown menu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After selecting the subsite to migrate, choose whether or not to password-protect your package and click the <strong>Continue<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p>In the next modal window, click the <strong>Build Package<\/strong> button, unless you want to exclude specific files, folders, or database tables using filters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191777\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-191777 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/mu-package-filters.png\" alt=\"Shipper - Package exclusion filters.\" width=\"600\" height=\"714\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">You can exclude files, folders, or database files from your package or export your entire subsite.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shipper performs a comprehensive &#8220;pre-flight&#8221; check and builds your package automatically.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191779\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-191779 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/shipper-mu-build-package.png\" alt=\"Shipper Building Package modal\" width=\"600\" height=\"573\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Try winning a no-blinking staring contest with our one-eyed capt&#8217;n while you wait for your package to build.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once your package is ready, download both the package archive and installer files to your hard drive.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191780\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191780\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/shipper-package-ready.png\" alt=\"Shipper - Package Ready modal\" width=\"600\" height=\"587\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Your migration package has arrived!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next, upload both the package archive and installer files via FTP to the root directory of your destination site&#8217;s server (i.e. your single WordPress install) using an FTP client (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/filezilla-project.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Filezilla<\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191784\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191784\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/sftp-upload.png\" alt=\"Filezilla window\" width=\"600\" height=\"564\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Upload archive and installer files to your single WP install root directory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Note: You will need to obtain your FTP login details from your host. If your sites are hosted with WPMU DEV, you can grab your SFTP login details from The Hub by selecting your destination site and clicking through to the <strong>Hosting &gt; SFTP\/SSH<\/strong> tabs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191783\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-191783 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/sftp-details.png\" alt=\"The Hub - Hosting - SFTP\" width=\"600\" height=\"662\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grab your SFTP login details from The Hub.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After uploading the package archive and installer files to your single WordPress install&#8217;s root directory, navigate to <code>https:\/\/yourdomain.com\/installer.php<\/code> in your browser and follow the migration wizard&#8217;s instructions to complete the migration process.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191785\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191785\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/package-migration-wizard.png\" alt=\"Package Migration Wizard screen.\" width=\"600\" height=\"609\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Follow the wizard to complete your migration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You can create a new database on your single destination site or overwrite your existing WordPress installation. If you choose to overwrite your destination site, we recommend enabling the &#8220;Fetch database credentials from the config file&#8221; option. Since the destination site is there, it will pull the database credentials automatically from the <code>wp-config.php<\/code> file.<\/p>\n<p>Choose an option and click the button to test the connection and deploy your migration.<\/p>\n<video loop muted autoplay playsinline class='dev-html5-video'><source src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/database-connection.webm\" type=\"video\/webm\"><source src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/database-connection.mp4\" type=\"video\/mp4\"><\/video>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small>Create a new database on your destination site or overwrite the existing one.<\/small><\/p>\n<p>The Migration Wizard will automatically run through the deployment and installation process and then ask you to confirm and update your new site&#8217;s details.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191790\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191790\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/wizard-update-data.png\" alt=\"Migration Wizard - Update Data modal\" width=\"600\" height=\"521\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Last step&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Once this process is complete, you will be asked to log into your newly migrated site and check that everything is ok.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Log in with your source site&#8217;s details. If everything looks ok, run the cleanup script to remove the migration files from your server.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191791\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191791\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/migration-wiz-finish-cleanup.png\" alt=\"Migration Wizard - Finish and Cleanup modal\" width=\"600\" height=\"307\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">All done! API Migration<\/h3>\n<p>You can select the API method from the plugin&#8217;s dashboard or go to <strong>Shipper &gt; API Migration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This method lets you export a site to another server or import another site into the site you are working on.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191827\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191827\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/shipper-api-migration.png\" alt=\"API Migration screen.\" width=\"600\" height=\"594\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">With API Migration you can export and import sites.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For this tutorial, we&#8217;ll export a subsite from a Multisite installation into the single WordPress installation we&#8217;ve previously set up.<\/p>\n<p>Click the <strong>Export<\/strong> button to begin the process (if you&#8217;re in the plugin&#8217;s dashboard screen, click on <strong>Export &gt; Begin Migration<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Choose <strong>Subsite to Single site<\/strong> as the Migration Type, select the subsite to migrate from the subsite drop-down menu, then click <strong>Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191838\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191838\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/shipper-api-migration-type.png\" alt=\"Shipper API Migration - Migration Type modal window\" width=\"600\" height=\"641\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Select the subsite to export.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After confirming your password, Shipper does a few tasks in the background and asks you to select your destination site.<\/p>\n<p>Choose the site you want to export your subsite to from the dropdown menu and click the blue arrow button to continue.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191839\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191839\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/api-choose-destination.png\" alt=\"Shipper API Migration - Choose Destination modal window\" width=\"600\" height=\"443\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Select your destination site.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After preparing your files, Shipper presents you with the Migration Filters window. As discussed earlier, this allows you to exclude any files, folders, or databases you don&#8217;t want to export.<\/p>\n<p>Use the filters to exclude items or skip this step to migrate the entire subsite and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_191841\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191841\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/api-migration-filters.png\" alt=\"Shipper API Migration - Migration Filters modal window\" width=\"600\" height=\"749\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Use the Migration Filters window to exclude any files, folders, or databases from your migration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shipper will run an extensive Pre-flight check and let you know if it detects any issues.<\/p>\n<p>Issues in &#8220;red&#8221; indicate errors that will prevent your migration from completing successfully.
