This can happen for a variety of reasons, including data-heavy images, lack of caching, CDN quality, and a \u201chost\u201d of other tangibles. We\u2019ve been there, and can tell you there is an easy \u2015 and free! \u2015 way to make great strides in improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at what we\u2019ll be doing to accomplish this.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-513-_clb1ai2izalp\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Note:<\/em> We&#8217;ve indicated below which steps involve no cost vs. some cost.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Install Avada Theme Builder &amp; theme on a clean WP site (requires Avada theme license.)<\/li>\n<li>Tweak Avada optimization settings <em>(no cost)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Install Smush; optimize settings <em>(no cost)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Install Hummingbird; optimize settings <em>(no cost)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Turn on CDN in Hummingbird (requires <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/project\/wp-hummingbird\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hummingbird Pro<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Turn on FastCGI in the Hub (via <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/optimized-wordpress-vps-hosting-dyi-vs-managed\/\" target=\"_blank\">WPMU DEV Hosting<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Run speed tests, after each step above <em>(no cost)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Repeat entire procedure again, using a different Avada theme (no cost if you&#8217;ve already purchased Avada theme license.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><a id=\"post-513-_9m14qqdmro31\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>Parameters<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>We\u2019ll be using a clean foundation, meaning, our site will be built on a brand new WordPress installation.<\/li>\n<li>Theme configurations and options will be kept static after initial installation.<\/li>\n<li>My hosting is the Bronze plan, through WPMU DEV Managed WordPress hosting.<\/li>\n<li>My region is USA\/East.<\/li>\n<li>Plugins are Smush and Hummingbird only.<br \/>\n(If you\u2019re using our hosting, you will see the<a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/project\/wpmu-dev-dashboard\/\" target=\"_blank\"> WPMU DEV Dashboard<\/a> plugin, as it\u2019s automatically installed on sites hosted by us.)<\/li>\n<li>GTmetrix speed testing done using their default server location (Vancouver, Canada), and default browser (Chrome Desktop).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"post-513-_tixv1m1g0gik\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>Particulars<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sites hosted by WPMU DEV will install the Pro versions of Smush &amp; Hummingbird. To mirror non-pro versions of the plugins, I conducted all of my initial tests with the Pro features disabled.<\/p>\n<p>Hummingbird optimization uses<a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/types-of-web-cache-wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\"> different types of caching<\/a> and compression features on sites. <strong>Page<\/strong>, <strong>Gravatar<\/strong>, and <strong>RSS <\/strong>caching were disabled. Most hosts, including WPMU DEV, typically turn on browser caching and GZip compression by default. Since we can\u2019t turn these off without impacting other settings, they\u2019ll remain on during our tests.<\/p>\n<p>Finally,<a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/optimize-divi-wordpress-smush-hummingbird\/\" target=\"_blank\"> as we\u2019ve mentioned in other optimization articles<\/a>, please note that no one will have the exact same results, because of the variables inherent to each element. Your geographical region, the size of your media library, your hosting provider, all paint part of the picture using very different brushstrokes. But no matter your particular site environment, you are bound to see marked improvement with this process.<\/p>\n<p>Alright, let\u2019s hit the track.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-513-_vb9r6bsu4o6h\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>Hitting Peak Speeds Using Smush &amp; Hummingbird with Avada<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In preparation for this process, let\u2019s make our tool kits match, like sisters on picture day. (Was it only my mom who did that with us?) If you haven\u2019t already, download the<a href=\"https:\/\/themeforest.net\/item\/avada-responsive-multipurpose-theme\/2833226\" target=\"_blank\"> Avada Website Builder<\/a>. You\u2019ll also need the<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/wp-smushit\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Smush<\/a> &amp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/hummingbird-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Hummingbird<\/a> plugins (both of which are free), but we\u2019ll add those a little later.<\/p>\n<p>For our speed measurement tools, we\u2019ll be using<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/speed\/pagespeed\/insights\" target=\"_blank\"> Google PageSpeed Insights<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/gtmetrix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> GTmetrix<\/a>, so you might want to open those two sites now.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you are starting on a new WP site, with no new pages or posts created, and no optional plugins or add-ons activated.<\/p>\n<p>Next, install the Avada website builder. There are two additional Avada plugins required \u2015 <strong>Core<\/strong>, and <strong>Builder <\/strong>\u2015 so we\u2019ll go ahead and install them as well.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197706\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197706\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/002-avada-core-builder-plugins-required.png\" alt=\"Avada Core &amp; Builder plugins.\" width=\"1001\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Avada\u2019s Core and Builder plugins must be installed to use the theme builder.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><a id=\"post-513-_q9udznm59j0c\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>Theme 1 \u2015 Avada Spa<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Time to make our actual theme selection. For this first test, we\u2019ll use <strong>Avada Spa.<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t require any additional plugins, but has a fair number of images, so it seems like a good one to try. It\u2019s tucked into the pre-built library in the Avada dashboard, and installation is a few simple clicks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197707\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197707\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/003-avada-spa-required-plugins-install-screen.png\" alt=\"Avada Spa import screen.\" width=\"875\" height=\"798\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Select only the content you want to import during theme installation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With our theme installed and applied, and before we start tweaking or adding anything, we should get an initial snapshot of our speed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197708\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197708\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/004-gpsi-74.png\" alt=\"GPSI 74\" width=\"1011\" height=\"392\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">GPSI gives us a fair to middlin score.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197709\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197709\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/005-C-67-95.png\" alt=\"GTM C-67-95\" width=\"1000\" height=\"518\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">GTM is on a par with Google for our initial speed test.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Both scores fall in the \u201c7Os\u201d or \u201cC\u201d range. We can definitely do much better.<\/p>\n<p>I want to look into Avada\u2019s built-in optimization settings, make some adjustments there, and see if we get page speed improvements.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197710\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-ratio-full wp-image-197710\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/006-avada-built-in-optimz-screen-portion-of-menu-1050x752.png\" alt=\"Avada built in Optimizer screen\" width=\"1050\" height=\"752\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A snippet of Avada\u2019s built-in optimization menu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From the <strong>Options<\/strong>\/<strong>Performance<\/strong> menu tab, here are the changes I made:<\/p>\n<p>Performance<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Image Lazy Loading <\/em>&gt;&gt; from <strong>None<\/strong> to <strong>Avada<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Font Face Rendering<\/em> &gt;&gt; from <strong>Block<\/strong> to <strong>Swap All<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Preload Key Fonts <\/em>&gt;&gt; from <strong>Icon Fonts<\/strong> to <strong>All<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Load Stylesheet in Footer<\/em> &gt;&gt; from <strong>Off<\/strong> to <strong>On<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dynamic CSS &amp; JS<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Load Media-Queries Files Asynchronously<\/em> &gt;&gt; from <strong>Off <\/strong>to <strong>On<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With all changes saved, we\u2019ll check our speed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197711\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197711\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/007-gpsi-77.png\" alt=\"GPSI 77\" width=\"1012\" height=\"392\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Double sevens, so we tapped up a smidge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"image-grid cgrid-row\">\n<div class=\"cgrid-col cgrid-col-span-full\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_197712\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197712\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/008-C-71-85.png\" alt=\"GTM C-71-85\" width=\"1000\" height=\"518\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A bit of a wash per GTM, with performance going up and structure going down.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Let\u2019s try the first of our optimization plugins, and activate Smush.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197713\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197713\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/009-smush-plugin-banner.png\" alt=\"Smush banner\" width=\"887\" height=\"438\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smush is our user\u2019s choice, award winning, and benchmark tested image optimizer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Upon navigating to the Smush dashboard, you should be greeted with the quick setup wizard. These settings include: <em>Auto Compression<\/em>, <em>EXIF Metadata<\/em>, <em>Full Size Images<\/em>, <em>Lazy Load<\/em>, and <em>Usage Data<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what each feature does:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Auto Compression <\/strong>\u2015 will automatically optimize new image uploads, so you don\u2019t have to do each one manually.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EXIF Metadata<\/strong> \u2015 will strip camera settings from your images, helping reduce file size. (Don\u2019t worry; it won\u2019t strip SEO metadata).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Full Size Images <\/strong>\u2015 will compress your original full size images. (Note: by default, it stores copies of your originals, in case you ever want to revert back.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lazy Load<\/strong> \u2015 will stop offscreen images from loading until a visitor scrolls to them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Usage Data<\/strong> \u2015 will let our designers gain insight into what features need improvement. (Your personal data will <em>never <\/em>be tracked.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Go ahead and run through each screen, leaving default settings on. (Allowing <em>Usage Data<\/em> will help towards the functionality of future versions of the plugin, but if it makes you uncomfortable in the least, leave it off.)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197714\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197714\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/010-smush-bulk-smush-now-button.png\" alt=\"Smush bulk smush now button\" width=\"1043\" height=\"455\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smush makes suggestions to maximize image compression.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once the wizard completes, the dashboard will reflect how many images could use compressing. Hulk smash that <strong>Bulk Smush Now<\/strong> button!<\/p>\n<p>What do our image optimization stats look like now, Mdm. Smush?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197715\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197715\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/011-smush-bulk-smush-savings.png\" alt=\"Bulk Smush now\" width=\"684\" height=\"626\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">54 images smushed, saving 3.2 mb. This time, she\u2019ll just suggest running a performance test, which is exactly what we want to do.<\/p>\n<p>Once the test is complete, you\u2019ll get a notification letting you know.<\/p>\n<p>The dashboard shows us the score from the performance test.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197719\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-ratio-full wp-image-197719\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/015-hbird-perf-test-83-3.3.17-1050x661.png\" alt=\"Hummingbird performance test 83\" width=\"1050\" height=\"661\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">83 is not too shabby! We\u2019re already flying, but we\u2019ve yet to hit our highest altitude.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hummingbird provides lists and a chart of assorted metrics and audits that were rated during the performance test.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197720\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-ratio-full wp-image-197720\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/016-hbird-perf-test-new-vers-pie-1050x502.png\" alt=\"Hummingbird performance test 83 pie\" width=\"1050\" height=\"502\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hummingbird tracks six metrics in the Performance section of the Lighthouse report.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She also provides additional score metrics called <em>Audits<\/em>. These separate issues into the categories of: <em>Opportunities, Diagnostics, <\/em>and <em>Passed Audits \u2015<\/em> all recommendations for improving your performance score.<\/p>\n<p><em>Opportunities<\/em> are basically color-coded alerts. Yellow indicates a mild to moderate issue, and Red means the issue is significantly impacting performance.<\/p>\n<p>In this performance evaluation, Hummingbird has indicated that I have 3 <em>Opportunities, <\/em>which as least one of is high priority (red squoval).<\/p>\n<p>To resolve these <em>Opportunities<\/em>, click on any alert row, and it will display:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a detailed description of the issue<\/li>\n<li>a list of specific assets involved<\/li>\n<li>step-by-step instructions on how to resolve the issue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197721\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197721\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/017-hbird-diagnostic-opportunities-what-to-do-theme-1.png\" alt=\"Hummingbird diagnostic opportunities what to do\" width=\"1047\" height=\"1263\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">You don\u2019t have to go digging through pages of instructions or do mad googling; Hummingbird spells everything out for you on any flagged issues.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to address these, and that\u2019s what I\u2019ll do now. Once you\u2019ve made the fixes, you can move on to the next step\u2026 asset optimization.<\/p>\n<p>From the left menu bar, choose <strong>Asset Optimization<\/strong>. Let\u2019s move on to our second round of testing by installing a different theme.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-513-_6jckw1pml9f\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>Theme 2 \u2015 Avada Classic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For our second test environment, we\u2019re going to use <strong>Avada Classic.<\/strong> It requires the additional WooCommerce plugin to be installed, so will add an interesting element which could possibly affect page load speeds.<\/p>\n<p>Before we actually change themes, let\u2019s roll back to our original test environment. If you have WPMU DEV\u2019s hosting, turn <em>off <\/em>FastCGI from the Hub. In Hummingbird, turn <em>off <\/em>CDN Asset Optimization. Then deactivate both the Hummingbird &amp; Smush plugins.<\/p>\n<p>We also need to revert the Avada Performance optimizations back to their defaults, via the <em>Options\/Performance<\/em> tab, <strong>Reset All<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Once again from the Avada Dashboard, let\u2019s navigate to the pre-built themes. Make sure you select all the components you installed for Avada Spa; then click <strong>Remove<\/strong>. Once PWA is installed and activated, I\u2019ve got some choices now under <em>Options <\/em>for <em>Progressive Web App<\/em>. Because our new theme added new images to the media library, we need to let Smush do her thing.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll already see the savings from bulk compression in her dashboard. We didn\u2019t have to actively smush the images added to the media library with this theme, because we had previously told Smush to automatically compress our images on upload. She\u2019ll tell you how many assets are found; click the \u201c<strong>Got it<\/strong>\u201d button. Before I get carried away with the checkered flag, I just want to share a serious thought on continued testing.<\/p>\n<p>There will be slight variances if we were to test randomly going forward, as none of the elements are truly static. But you shouldn\u2019t see any significant dips in page loading time, with all of the tweaks we\u2019ve put into play.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-513-_gnjobslb1dgf\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><strong>Tips for Overall Speed Gains in Avada<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This has been an eye-opening experience. Avada can most definitely ramp up the pace when used in tandem with Smush and Hummingbird. Even though we fine tuned numerous settings, there are some things you should always consider when it comes to getting and maintaining optimal speed on your site.<\/p>\n<p>They are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose a theme that\u2019s more minimalistic (i.e., \u201clight\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Delete plugins that are old or no longer being used<\/li>\n<li>Enable<a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/types-of-web-cache-wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\"> caching<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Minify and Defer CSS &amp; JavaScript<\/li>\n<li>Use a<a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/how-to-choose-the-best-cdn-for-wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\"> CDN<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Fix broken links<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/image-optimization-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\">Optimize your images<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Update your<a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/the-best-wordpress-hosting\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Hosting Plan<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That last one can really make a night and day difference.
