Our latest hosting feature helps put a stop to that, allowing you to quickly and instantly suspend any site until you get paid.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years we&#8217;ve heard every imaginable client horror story from our web developer members.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most common being when website clients don&#8217;t pay for hosted sites on time (or at all!).<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve ever been in this boat, you&#8217;ll be happy to hear we&#8217;ve just released <strong>a new hosting feature allowing you to suspend and unsuspend sites quickly and easily!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can also add custom suspension messages to any hosted site, right from your Hub site management dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>As you\u2019ll see, suspending a site can be done with any <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/hosting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WPMU DEV Hosting<\/a> account in a few clicks.<\/p>\n<p>When a site is suspended, the content doesn\u2019t go anywhere &#8211; so it\u2019s just a matter of unsuspending it to bring a WordPress site back to normal.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick look at how it\u2019s done!<\/p>\n<p><strong>In this post:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#suspend-wordpress-site\">How to Suspend a Hosted WordPress Site From The Hub<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#suspend-site-method-1\">Method 1: Hosting &gt; Tools<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#suspend-site-method-2\">Method 2: Ellipsis &gt; Suspend Site<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#locate-suspended-site-filters-labels\">Easily Locate Suspended Sites with Filters &amp; Labels<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#other-ways\">Other Useful Ways To Use The Suspending Sites Feature<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#additional-notes\">Suspending Sites &#8211; Additional Notes<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"suspend-wordpress-site\">How to Suspend a Hosted WordPress Site From The Hub<\/h2>\n<p>If you need to suspend a hosted site for you or your client, click on the website you\u2019d like to suspend in <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/hub-welcome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Hub<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are two ways to get started.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"suspend-site-method-1\">Method 1: Hosting &gt; Tools<\/h3>\n<p>One method is to go to the <strong>Hosting<\/strong> cloud icon and select <strong>Tools<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212751\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212751\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/tools-tab.png\" alt=\"The tools area from the dropdown.\" width=\"1004\" height=\"1166\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Select Tools in the dropdown options.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scroll down to the <strong>Suspend Site<\/strong> area and click <strong>Off<\/strong>. This will initiate changing it to a suspended site.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212752\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-ratio-full wp-image-212752\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/suspend-site-area-1050x199.png\" alt=\"The suspend site area.\" width=\"1050\" height=\"199\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click Off to turn Suspend Site on!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"suspend-site-method-2\">Method 2: Ellipsis &gt; Suspend Site<\/h3>\n<p>Another quicker option is to click the <strong>ellipsis<\/strong> next to any hosted site. This will open up a dropdown where you click <strong>Suspend Site<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212753\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-ratio-full wp-image-212753\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/elipsis-1050x1016.png\" alt=\"Elipsis area by website.\" width=\"1050\" height=\"1016\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This method is the quickest way.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Either way, if you click Suspend Site, you\u2019ll get a message to ensure you want to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just a reminder that the site will receive a 503 Error and that you\u2019ll be charged normally for hosting.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212754\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212754\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/suspend-site-message.png\" alt=\"Message about suspended a site.\" width=\"996\" height=\"790\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A warning sign pops up before the site is suspended.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Do you still want to suspend the site? Then click the <strong>Suspend Site<\/strong> button to confirm<\/p>\n<p>The Hub will now show a <strong>Suspended <\/strong>icon next to the suspended website.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212755\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212755\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/the-suspended-website.png\" alt=\"Red indicator that site is suspended.\" width=\"926\" height=\"408\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">As you can see, the WPMU DEV Test Site is now suspended.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The red suspension message won\u2019t go anywhere, so you\u2019ll always be able to see what\u2019s suspended and what\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>And now that this site\u2019s suspended, visitors will see a <strong>503 Service Unavailable<\/strong> message on the website.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212756\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-ratio-full wp-image-212756\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/503-Error-1050x344.png\" alt=\"The 503 error message.\" width=\"1050\" height=\"344\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the default suspension message that the site\u2019s visitors will see.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to change the 503 messaging, you can customize it to anything you want.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/docs\/hosting\/overview\/#customizing-error-pages\" target=\"_blank\">Read our documentation<\/a> on how to do this. Just make sure that you name your file <code>suspended.html<\/code> and upload it to the root directory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ready to unsuspend?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it&#8217;s time to unsuspend a site, that\u2019s a breeze to do as well. It\u2019s the same approach as suspending it.<\/p>\n<p>Just head back into <strong>Tools <\/strong>or<strong> Ellipsis <\/strong>and click <strong>Unsuspend Site<\/strong>. A message will appear that indicates it will be active again. Click <strong>Unsuspend Site<\/strong> again to confirm.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212757\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212757\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/unsuspend-site.png\" alt=\"Where you unsuspend sites.\" width=\"952\" height=\"394\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unsuspending is just one click away.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>And that\u2019s it! <\/em>The site is now unsuspended and back to normal.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"locate-suspended-site-filters-labels\">Easily Locate Suspended Sites with Filters &amp; Labels<\/h2>\n<p>Along with having a red indicator that a site is suspended, there\u2019s another way to navigate around The Hub and locate your suspended websites.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Filters and Labels<\/strong> feature allows you to selectively order groups of sites based on several standard categories and labels, including suspended sites.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212758\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212758\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/filters-and-labels.png\" alt=\"The filters and labels tab.\" width=\"1022\" height=\"372\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">There\u2019s a lot you can locate from Filters &amp; Labels.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From here, select <strong>Suspended <\/strong>to view just the sites you have suspended.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212759\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" data-caption=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-ratio-full wp-image-212759\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/suspended-filter-1050x602.png\" alt=\"The suspend button.\" width=\"1050\" height=\"602\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Only suspended sites will show up once you activate this filter.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You can filter by numerous categories at once and adjust accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, be sure to <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/docs\/hub-2-0\/my-websites-overview\/#filters-labels\" target=\"_blank\">check out our site management documentation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-ways\">Other Useful Ways To Use The Suspending Sites Feature:<\/h2>\n<p>Aside from moving along late-payers, another reason to suspend is if you have a personal website or a site for a client that is under maintenance. It\u2019s an alternative to methods such as <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/branda-white-labeling\/\" target=\"_blank\">our free Branda plugin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, if a site is heavily impacted by malware, spam complaints, excessive use of server resources, or something else causing complications &#8211; you may want a site to be suspended until it\u2019s entirely cleaned up.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"additional-notes\">Suspending Sites &#8211; Additional Notes<\/h2>\n<p>Here are some additional points to note when you suspend a site:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Email accounts or forwarding addresses for a suspended site will continue to work<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Backups for suspended sites will still work fine while the site remains suspended<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Site monitoring tools (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/monitor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uptime<\/a>) will show the site as being down<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See our documentation section for <a href=\"https:\/\/wpmudev.com\/docs\/hosting\/tools-features\/#suspend-site-additional-notes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additional site suspension notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Take Advantage Of The New Ability To Suspend Sites When Needed!<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s available for any hosted site with WPMU DEV &#8211; and is totally free to use.<\/p>\n<p>Bookmark this article as a reference.
