It&#8217;s very easy with BuddyPress version 1.5+. Enabling or disabling avatar uploads is built into the core. However, disabling uploads will still allow Gravatars, so your users won&#8217;t be completely without avatars. The advantage in this is that Gravatar hosts all of your avatars and you don&#8217;t have to worry about it.
