domain mapping vs WordPress MU Domain Mapping

hi there,

I run a three blog networks and till now I’m used to use the original WP MU domain mapping tool.

is there any advantage in using the wpmu version (domain mapping)?

so far I have followed the postings within the support section, domain mapping does not support a “www” subhost nor does it support multiple IPs – is this correct?

is there any upgrade path?

    Hiya!

One advantage of using Domain Mapping is that support for it is integrated in Pro Sites, which is important because Pro Sites can only provide premium status to plugins that are not network activated, and plugins like these need to be network activated. Domain Mapping provides integration with Pro Sites to deal with that.

Another reason would be that it’s support here.

The ‘www’ subhost I’m not sure about. You mean as far as allowing sub-sites to use a ‘www.domain.com’ type of domain? If so, I believe that’d be an issue with both plugins, no?

Domain Mapping doesn’t allow for multiple IPs as far as I’m aware, does the other plugin though? Last I recall, they’re both the same in that regard.

Also, there’s not an update path from Mu Domain Mapping to the Domain Mapping plugin here.

    Hi wpmudevpss7,

I don’t know of any methods currently for exporting a blog into a Multisite blog myself.

I imagine you could do an export of the sub-sites database tables, change the table references and re-import them, it’s quite a bit of experimenting though.

The only software I’m aware of that’s being developed somewhat to that effect is BackupBuddy, but I don’t believe it can export from the sub-site into another sub-site. Here’s a page from that plugin’s codex, apparently in progress.

Of course, the export tool in your site’s Tools > Export menu can export content and you could then import that content at Tools > Import. It just wouldn’t have the plugin and other settings stored.
