How to add pictures to my blog homescreen

I have the showcase theme and on my blog page there are squares above my 3 posts that look like they should have pictures and I am not sure how. I have tried to set a featured image and that does not work.

    Thank you for your patience while I dug into this theme which I admit I have not had much experience with in the past and I thank you for the opportunity to do so.

    Those images are set by the featured image option of the post itself – set the featured image to the image of you choice within the post and it displays on the front end.

    That should do the job for you.

    aecnu is correct.

    To be a little clearer if your new to WordPress: goto your Post Page and on the right side chooser "featured image" select the photo you want to use in that post. Make sure to hit the "publish" button.

    That's it that photo will show where you want it to:
