Check out our new jobs & pros section (and become a pro :)

Hey Everyone,

So, we’ve developed a new section for members to post custom dev job requests and to advertise their services as ‘pros’.

It’s still in beta and we’re not advertising it outside of the forums fo rthe moment, so now’s your opportunity to get set up and be a star when we go ‘properly’ live.

https://wpmudev.com/wpmu-custom-development/

Here’s some stuff you can do:

Become a pro… Promote your stuff, get work, build an awesome new WPMU DEV profile: https://wpmudev.com/pro/new-pro/

Post a job…. Need some custom dev work, css tweaks, plugin customization? Go post it here: https://wpmudev.com/jobs/new-job/

Get some work… Browse existing jobs and see if you fancy a crack, contact the posters and make some money https://wpmudev.com/jobs/

Browse other Pros… You might find someone you;d like tow ork with, or get some ideas about how you can best promote yourself: https://wpmudev.com/pros/

And, of course, this is all 100% free for WPMU DEV members.

Oh, and we’ll be releasing the plugin we’ve developed to make this too in the not too distant future.

Let us know how you go, post about bugs / issues / ideas and anything else you want!!!

Cheers, James

    Thanks @James!

I’m looking forward to using this expanded feature of WPMU DEV.

    Couple if things I noticed.

    – Can we have some sort of link to a page that explains more about what can and should be handled within support, what is part of a feature enhancement, and what will require a custom job request?

    – Is there anyway that at some point we can see a scheduled list of what is in the que for future feature enhancements? This may even allow some of the more experienced users a way to help with the feature enhancement in trade for points? Or maybe this opens up a can of worms that your staff would not be able to handle (regarding the additional testing required).

    – I noticed that one “job” was actually a posting of a service offering. Should there be another tab or area where the pros can post their service offerings? Or maybe it is just a modification in how the profile is used.

I am looking forward to it!

    Thanks!

    Hi Martin,

Good feedback, I’ll go line by line:

    – Can we have some sort of link to a page that explains more about what can and should be handled within support, what is part of a feature enhancement, and what will require a custom job request?

Yeh, we’ll work that up when we officially launch this, the idea is that we’ll continue to support anything WP ourselves including custom code as much as we can, but when appropriate (as it often is) we’ll suggest to poepel that they use the custom section by contacting a pro and/or posting a job.

Yes, that’s been specced out and is just waiting some development time, I think/hope members will find it very useful  No ETA unfortunately but the concept will be pretty much as youd escribe.

    – I noticed that one “job” was actually a posting of a service offering. Should there be another tab or area where the pros can post their service offerings? Or maybe it is just a modification in how the profile is used.

Yeh, that’s someone messing with the service, and will be deleted, we’re going to be introducing more post-moderation practices to catch that kind of stuff… they should be advertising themselves as a pro who provides that service.

    Thanks again for the feedback!

    Hey @Martin

    – Can we have some sort of link to a page that explains more about what can and should be handled within support, what is part of a feature enhancement, and what will require a custom job request?

As a quick rule, anything that takes a few minutes we’re happy to help deal with. You know something like change the colour of this link, remove X from the plugin, that kind of thing.

Something that takes ten or twenty plus minutes, well that’s usually considered custom and really should require a developer.

That said, we love to help members so we’ll always do the best we can as I know you’ve seen around the community.

And we’re always more than happy to offer advice and direction for those more complex tickets.

    Thank you, Mr. Bowers!

I think I have a pretty clear understanding of the different levels of service. It just seems like I come across quite a few forum posts that seem to not understand the differences. I was just looking for an easy way to set or reset their expectations.

With that said, it is very clear to me that you guys love to help members. I have experienced that.

When this is released as a plugin in the future will it integrate with buddypress profiles and sync with buddypress xprofile fields?

Awesome to see WPMUDEV finally releasing a job board plugin…! I’ve been waiting 4 years

    Keep up the great dev!

    Hey @Dev4

Did you get all fields filled in, and did you save live?

    Hey @Martin

They are tags, anyone can enter anything. So it would have been something a member entered.

Because of minor issues like that we’re going to look at doing some kind of moderation where we simply review submissions before they go live. More on that later.

I’ve updated that tag now

Ok, so I found my way back to edit my profile (found it in my browser history)

I had missed the “go public” button… So that is sorted out and my profile is published.

I still dont see a link to get to my profile to edit it, unless i use my own browser link.

Am i just not seeing it, like i missed the go public button?

WPMU only gets more awesomer (is that a word?) every time I come here.

I have only been a member since October and yet am amazed at the level of support that is offered here for everything WP and this only puts a cherry on the cake for me.

    Just created my Pro(file) now.

    Thanks for being amazing.

    Hello!

Been looking at this, think it could be good.

Was confused at the browse jobs though as it directs to the people under pro’s https://wpmudev.com/pros/ not sure if that is intended for now.

There is nothing to suggest what job is there to see.

Under become a pro https://wpmudev.com/pro/new-pro/ the fields to input are a little limited. You say advertise your services but the only fields I see are

    Biography

    Portfolio

    Skills

I am not sure where ‘services’ would fit into those editable fields.

Would suggest that you add another one for that purpose. I for example offer specific WordPress hosting. While I wouldn’t span your forums with that I’d be happy to include it on this page if permitted to do so. But I think that may be open to abuse so not sure how you would police that.

Looking good altogether, nice add on for the site.

Okay, throwing my own collection of hats into the ring

The one thing I haven’t figured out yet is the numeric equivalent of the skill level bars. What I first enter when adding or entering a skill doesn’t seem to match where that level is when I save that entry. Kinda confusing at first.

Also, is there a limit to how many items can be in the Portfolio section? Just wondering if it would be better to have a link to the portfolio showcase on my own website or just pick a few of the highlights for the Portfolio here.

Was confused at the browse jobs though as it directs to the people under pro’s https://wpmudev.com/pros/ not sure if that is intended for now.

    Biography

    Portfolio

    Skills

I am not sure where ‘services’ would fit into those editable fields.

If you offer PHP and MySQL services you can include them within the Skills area. If you offer an SEO service that’s also a skill.

And then extend upon that (and any of your services) within the Biography area. Your portfolio can show examples of your work and skills.

Would suggest that you add another one for that purpose. I for example offer specific WordPress hosting.

Sounds like that could go in the Biography area.

While I wouldn’t span your forums with that I’d be happy to include it on this page if permitted to do so. But I think that may be open to abuse so not sure how you would police that.

Anyone abusing the service will simply have their profile removed and not permitted further access.

You can of course mention your hosting business in there, it is a service you offer after all.

    Hey @atouchofsummer

The one thing I haven’t figured out yet is the numeric equivalent of the skill level bars. What I first enter when adding or entering a skill doesn’t seem to match where that level is when I save that entry. Kinda confusing at first.

So when you enter 50% then 50% of the bar should be coloured. Are you not seeing this? What are you seeing?

Also, is there a limit to how many items can be in the Portfolio section? Just wondering if it would be better to have a link to the portfolio showcase on my own website or just pick a few of the highlights for the Portfolio here.

You can add one link to site in the Company field. Best to keep portfolio stuff in the portfolio section for members to easily see whilst browsing through. I don’t believe there is a limit to the number of portfolio items however I could see either a modest limit being added or some pagination, we’ll see.

Thanks everyone for your awesome words and feedback!

So when you enter 50% then 50% of the bar should be coloured. Are you not seeing this? What are you seeing?

Actually, when I tried entering numbers, nothing happens at all. The only way for me to edit the level bar is to drag the slider to where it looks like 85% should be, for instance.

But the editable bar is smaller than the displayed bar, so the proportions don’t look quite the same after you save the changes.

What about adding a rating system of feedback so that clients can see what others have said about the developer and a potential developer can see reviews of the job requestors. The ratings should only be from those working with each other, not other projects.

The Job portal is looking very nice but i came across some minor issue, it would be great if you can correct that, as i would love to see the portal in best possible shape.

In posted job, the category is overlapping the content of the post. I guess minor css issue.

Screenshot is attached for the details.

(note: allowed attachment size is too low, it would be great if we get a bit more size supported for uploading the screenshots or attachments.)

  • Timothy
    • Chief Pigeon

    Hey again.

So the color is just randomly generated. The color doesn’t represent a code.

As I mentioned it’s in order, starting with Grey and ending in Orange. Left to right.

What about the size? Is that random or is it just related to the latest couple of posts?

They are ordered by default as newest first. So at the moment there is a job “Customize Appointments+ Rules” and this is the large on, it’s also grey which is the first colour.

When a new job is made that will move to the right smaller box, the yellow one. The new listing will take the larger grey box.

    Making sense?

    Screenshot included to show you.

The boxes and colours are ordered, the content moves along them as new ones get added (when in the default view).

    Cheers.

    Got it.

If that is the case, I would think it would make more sense to have the top 2 rows have two “blocks” each of the same size and all after have 4 per row.

We all know size matters, but I would think having the second most recent post smaller than the third doesn’t make sense.

    My 2 cents.

Thanks Tim! I really appreciate your work.

    @James Farmer,

It would be awesome if instead of having to set a max price you could set it to negotiable as well. This is just because it might take a consultation for the person that needs the development to fully understand what the project will cost.

New board – Job search – any plans to integrate a “posting info”

ie if looking at pro can search pro to find a little about them

but job – no indication – where are they from etc etc

Some spammy looking jobs placed – all go the long quick route to making a board a non entity..

    Clues like

Do you have a possibility to help me tuning it on my blog?

    How much could it cost?

Could be either “English not first language” or could be spoof fishing etc..

    How are posts monitored?

    Are they all from members?

Without a way to see who has posted high probability no one would respond – add many more similar and no one will look..

2 – Status – EXPIRED when dates still relevant – does that mean job has been given to a dev?

  • be
    • WP Core Meltdown

FYI : one way submission wall

(ie job poster – if email is sent to remains anonymous – however senders email is not )

Search a PRO seems off – ie entered word does not return expected results (what is it searching?)

    All fields, bio, Skills ?

How many Devs should show on the “find a Pro” page = currently different from home page results x 9 right hand side..

    Pro page x 18

How can you confirm a dev profile is live?

Are the Company links supposed to be linked?

If portfolio is graphic only has leading redundant http

  • Timothy
    • Chief Pigeon

    Hey @be

    1. Only active members can post job listings. No identifiable information is present because you must apply through the jobs board.

    – This ensures only members can make contact.

    – This allows us to track any abuse and nastiness and remove access as needed

    2. I think you're confusing things here.

Project Status: When you can apply, if it's expired no more applications.

Must be complete by: When the project must be completed by, this can remain as a future date whilst the status is Expired and no more applications are accepted.

You've not numbered you next set of questions so I'll quote and answer to save confusion.

FYI : one way submission wall

(ie job poster – if email is sent to remains anonymous – however senders email is not )

I'm not sure what you're asking or stating here?

Search a PRO seems off – ie entered word does not return expected results (what is it searching?)

    All fields, bio, Skills ?

I'm not 100% so I searched for country and got a result.

I then searched for content in a bio, I got a result.

I searched for something I knew was only in a portfolio, I got a result.

I then searched for a skill that I knew wasn't anywhere in a profile except a skill, it returned results.

So I'd say all of those.

How many Devs should show on the "find a Pro" page = currently different from home page results x 9 right hand side..

    Pro page x 18

I just took a look and counted them. 15 large, 10 small.

How can you confirm a dev profile is live?

When it says published rather than draft. See screen.

Are the Company links supposed to be linked?

    Yes.

If portfolio is graphic only has leading redundant http

Not sure what you're referring too?

I took a look and it appears to be working fine, perhaps I misunderstand?

    Cheers.

1 – Ok so to be clearer – how many devs are actually listed (ie are we seeing all of them when we look, there is no scroll so can only see as per screen )

2 – search for something like “print” returns 2 should be at least 3 …

3 – Co links do not appear to go anywhere.. (see screen) IE,Chrome, FF

4 – Portfolio graphic only (see screen)

5 – Email most directory or gateway sites allow initial anonymous contact – so currently if I answer a “job post”

a – I have no idea where they are located or anything about them…

b – they immediately get my email details (as opposed to a gateway – first contact – purpose to protect spam/trolling) until initial contact has been made both ways..

6 – maybe its a test post but comes up in the “about to end” list

    https://wpmudev.com/jobs/text-summary-widgetplugin/

Hope that makes more sense.

1 – see screen please ( I wonder if its a timing thing? but there are ones on the “home page” that are not on the Full page..) Maybe its because there is no gravatar brahahhaha..

2 – See mystery man home page

3 – Also note – dev info (screen above) = hyperlink name goes nowhere either (should this link to profile?)

5 – Apologies – testing, would never make enquiries if there were not at least initial anonymity. (IMO – this will likely be a problem as in folks will attempt once – if any problem having no contact protection will likely never use again.. )

Granted this may be a little different as members but what protection are you offering..

ie: If a member were to troll etc and another member applied to fulful a “job” then were spammed because there was intent..

Will DEVS consider at least placing a “country of origin” for the “job poster” at present there is absolutely no indication who, where etc so hinging on dev taking a giant leap of faith making contact..

6 – above post timing.. shows in current jobs (just wonder if its a setup/post problem)

  • be

Groaan – did not attach screen

Will also ask please – (possibly not the right area but it does relate to Dev profile on board so …

ie: Cash in 5000 points to become a lifemember – does that alter displayed ranking on dev board..?)

    Hey.

    1. The one without the gravatar shouldn’t be there and has gone.

I’ve reported the other to our devs to look at

    3. This was also reported with the home page link

    5. If another member was a troll they would get their membership revoked so they couldn’t continue harassing other members through the jobs boards.

We’ve never really had any issues with that, it’s how our old jobs board worked for years.

    6. The board is ordered by the timestamp of post (Latest) by default and can be ordered by about to end. It will move along as more new jobs are posted.

    7. I guess this refers to how Pro’s are currently ordered?

This will be changed to a more randomized order so points won’t affect how you rank on that Pro’s page.

You need to maintain an active membership to our services, or be a lifetime member (or free yearly member).

No minimum level of involvement, although being more active and being more helpful in the community is sure to help a client when picking someone to work for them. I know when we’re interviewing for new support staff we request links to any public support work they’ve done before, the more the better, and the more likely they get hired.

I suppose you could think of it like eBay, the more positive feedback you have the more likely someone is to buy from you at the price you’re asking.

Is there a way to request a change or alter the Pro URL? It looks like it’s using the name to generate the URL, I’d much prefer to use one that is more business centric. In my case, something like nwtd would be great, as I use this account for my business and have staff access the WPMU resources. Same witht he display name at the top of the profile, it would be great if we had an option to display our business name instead.

It’d also be nice to have more social media options available (google+, instagram, dribble, pinterest, etc), and maybe a phone number.

Just my two-cents. Over all, very awesome!

On a side note, when I attempt to add something to the portfolio (happens each and every time), I get the following error (variables different for each addition):

    if (window.top.ripple) { window.top.ripple("bootstrap").inject(window, document); }{"newValue": {"attachment_id":879569,"url":"http://nwtd.co/blog/portfolio/jds-home-training/","src":"http://wpmudev.com/wp-content/uploads/pro/879561/jds.png","caption":"","remove":"","file":"jds.png"}}
