How about using Pie Register or Gravity form to make it so the fields are only First Name, Username, Email Address, & password?

    Indeed, you can use other plugins, like those you mention, to handle the registration process. just be sure to let the Membership2 plugin know about it by adding the required constant to your wp-config.php file first.
