New Blog Templates Problem

This is a great idea but I’m having some issues with it that I can not figure out. I have buddy press installed

1. When I created a template and wanted to copy menu items, it created the buddy press menu items to point to the original “activity” instead of the new users activity

2. I had things LOCKED so no one can edit them….. OH OH I can’t even edit the menu

3. Since I couldn’t edit the menu I tried to DELETE the plugin and create a new site …. pages not created as before BUT the menu is

I’m stuck where the pages were not created but the menu was and I can not edit the menu. I tried everything to edit the menu and NO GO

I am sorry you feel that they were of no help. I can offer another piece of advice. If all else fails, hire someone who knows what they are doing. My replies were broad overviews of the typical issues that result in the symptoms you outlined. The variables involved with open source software are many. So there are a number of solutions or answers. I gave you the best advice I had based on info provided. I hope you are able to resolve the issue and maybe you have uncovered a previously unknown flaw which will help the community at large and prompt the developer to patch it.

I know my way around PHP …. I have a bachelors degree in computer programming. It was rather obvious that I was locked out. BUT it would have been more helpful to know what to look for to say YOUR LOCKED OUT

I had already looked at the htaccess and wpconfig files and even in the database but when one doesn’t know exactly what the LOCK out looks like it does not good to say look at the htaccess and wp-config files

I just deleted a weeks worth of work and hours of time and starting over again. Running out of time to just sit hunting for the YOUR LOCKED OUT but hmmmm no idea what it is your suppose to look for

Great if you have a background in php, then you are light years ahead of most the members of this community. Congrats on BS too. Do you find the degree useful? In this field it seems that experience is the key, over classroom training. Programming moves so fast, it’s hard for schools to keep up. So I felt my classroom efforts were wasted, I have MS btw, but in Comp Sci, not programming. Though I know about 15 languages.

Sounds like you checked or are checking all the right places. good luck.

in order to guide you better I would need more info than you provided. but even then, there could be a plugin conflict or some other unexpected result.

may I offer a piece of advice, you may be doing this already, if so. ignore it as unneeded info. but to save you from having to redo a bunch of work if an issue arises, use version control, that way you only have to move back before the change that caused the issue.

I have been there, having to redo work, so when I started using version control 8 years ago, It was a life saver.

I have re read your original post. I have a solution for you. use your PHP knowledge to rewrite things to do what you want them to do. No need to mess with plugins.

if you have confirmed the wp-config and htaccess is as it should be i.e. default wordpress (check the codex for these. the Codex is a developers best friend)

also if you can’t edit via the dashboard, use ftp or ssh to access the files.

hopefully this is much more helpful to you.

    Hi guys,

Let’s cool it on the insults and arguing please.

Michael, Jerry was only trying to help as a member of this community, he doesn’t know your experience levels, neither do I. and with the information provided, he answered with what he thought might work, so he had no idea you had checked wp-config.php or anything.

Please try to be a bit more respectful towards each other, I know how frustrating it can get when things don’t exactly go to plan.

I see this thread was marked resolved though, Michael could you confirm whether you still require assistance with this?

I do not know how you locked your site though, what plugins or options did you do to lock it?

    Thanks
