Question about Super Smush images and Resize my full-size images

I installed your plugin and use the pro trial period. I have a question about the image optimization.

When I optimized images a week ago, for the first time, I only checked the option “Super Smush my images” that you provide with no option to edit any dimension of images. Now, I am not sure if I needed to check “Resize my full-size images” option, instead. I would like to ask you about how you can sure about the image dimensions on the Super Smush my images option? I recently change my wp template and I have some load time website issues that i think that it has to do with image size files to some extent. I am a little bit anxious about it and I am trying to find a way to solve. Would you suggest me that I go for the second option of your plugin and “Resize my full-size” images? Or is it unnecessary? How can I adjust only the featured image dimensions and not those on the other places in any of my posts? I don’t know a lot of things about that, but I think it’s crusial for load time.

    I hope you are well today. I’ll be happy to clarify about how this works with Smush. :slight_smile:

    Super Smushing has more to do with the compression level. This activates the highest compression level available in the plugin. Meaning the dimensions will remain the same, but the file will be compressed as much as possible at the size that it is.

    “Resize my full-size images” has to do with the dimensions. So, if you have an image that is naturally 1920 x 1200 but the largest image placement on your site is 1024 x 768, you would set this option to match that smaller size. Then, whatever image you upload or Bulk Smush would be scaled down to that smaller size. But, these values are maximum. So, if your image is an odd size like 1920 x 600, then the maximum size it will be after resize is 1024 x 600.

    Now, this does not include any image resizing performed by your theme. For example, the default Twenty Seventeen theme automatically creates thumbnail sized for it’s different image locations, such as the featured image, which is max 2000 x 1200. You can actually customize this in your theme functions with a tiny bit of custom code. You can learn more about that here -> https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/set_post_thumbnail_size

    As a general rule, you want to set your Smush options to the largest possible size you’ll use on your site. Then, using set_post_thumbnail_size() you want to define sizes that will be used in the actual content areas.

    So, if your featured image is 1024 x 256, you’ll want to define the max size in Smush as 1024 x 1024 then use set_post_thumbnail_size() to set an image size of 1024 x 256. Smush will compress both the original size and the thumbnail size so that they are both fully optimized.

    The easiest way to determine what sizes you should be using is to use the Google Chrome DevTools inspector tool to see how your theme is rendering the images. This will give you a much better idea of how large you should go.
