[Smush Pro] Video optimisation

I would like to request that smush also support video optimization since that's where a huge amount of space can be saved even more than images. This will be best option for users who don't want to place their videos on YouTube and keep it hosted with them. To do this of-course you will need to setup some servers on your side that will do the re-encoding and transfer back to site the optimized version of the video with also several other format options not just mp4 to be supported on mobile too. That will be an amazing feature to have!

    Hi echostorm,

    Thanks for your suggestion, however, I’m afraid that we don’t have any plans on adding something like this anytime soon, and if we would introduce such service it would probably not be a part of Smush since the plugin is mainly focused on image optimization.

    We had only a few requests of this in the past and developing it would require a huge amount of resources while there’s not much of a demand for it.

    If you wish to save resources on your server you can check offloading plugins like WP Offload or similar.

    You did notice that this could be useful for people that want to host videos on their own server but this is quite a demanding task for the server and I would suggest using the existing services like Vimeo, Wistia or YouTube to host your videos as they already provide a compression during the upload and it should help you with serving optimized versions when linking them on your site.
