[Smush Pro] SMUSH Pro doesn't seem to be resizng images on upload

Hello!

I’ve been having some issues with REALLY huge images making their way to my website from contributing writers. SMUSH is set to resize any images to a max dimension of 1500 pixels but when I scan my with Hummingbird or look around the media library, there are files that are 8000 pixels wide!

1). Is there a way for SMUSH to go back to files that were already uploaded to resize them?

2). How are these files getting past SMUSH on the upload process?

    Hello Casey

making their way to my website from contributing writers

Could you please elaborate a bit more on this?
Are they using the default /wp-admin area or some front-end editor?
    Please advise!

look around the media library, there are files that are 8000 pixels wide

Please provide the file name of one of these images,
then grant temporary support access via WPMUDEV Dashboard plugin. No need to share any WP admin credentials, just navigate in WP admin area under WPMU DEV -> Support -> Support Access page and click on the “grant support access” button.

You can find detailed information about it here:
    https://wpmudev.com/docs/getting-started/getting-support/#chapter-5

Please do reply back here when access is granted because we don’t get any notifications about it.

    1) Bulk Smush should optimize all images -based on the selected options- that are in the Media library if no error is occurring of course.
    2) This shouldn’t be happening, unless there’s some error as said above.

    Thank you,
    Dimitris

    Hello there Casey

I’m afraid that this is happening because there’s an upper limit in Smush API and that is 32MB. Images larger than this, like the one you shared above which is 35MB, will be skipped from optimizations.

As these are really large images, I’d rather advise educating your editors to not use such large images, as they are useless in the web world, unless you’re doing some other work with them than just displaying them in your site.

You can also set upload limits so these don’t exceed the 32MB file size:

    Warm regards,
    Dimitris

Interesting — some of these images are large but I don’t think they’re over 32MB in size — that would be pretty dang huge for a JPEG.

I’m setting a max upload for the site to 2MB, which should take care of that at least. I’ll see if this issue shows up in any new posts or uploads.
