[WPMU DEV Dashboard] Domain Expiration Date Monitoring & Alerts

7

Occasionally we have a client that fails to renew their domain name registration, causing their website and email to go offline before it is detected.

Use Cases:
– As a website support team I would like to add value to our clients by monitoring the expiration date of the domain names being used for websites connected to the hub.
– As a website support manager, I would like to receive an alert email if a domain name is set to expire 7 days from today so that we can contact the client and help them get the domain renewed without business impact

Benefits:
– The end client has a partner monitoring their domain renewal so they do not need to worry about it if there is a problem. The client is happy.
– We, the team providing service, can charge more for our service since we’re providing an additional value-added service
– We, the team providing service, do not need to manually monitor domain renewal dates or pay for another service that must be setup and configured to solve this purpose

And, we’ve had this happen to two clients in the last 30 days. Both because payment information had expired or was declined. They received the email notifications from their registrar but they were not actioned. If we had known the expiry date we would have helped them avoid the problem.

      Love your website man!

I’ve been pondering about starting a nonprofit for a while, I’ve put countless hours into researching the market and how to secure seed funding and still have majority ownership, but have had no success, do you have any advice or content I could consume?

Honestly, your best bet is to just hold the domain for them. While I used to encourage all clients to buy it themselves, there’s so much wasted time with them changing nameservers or giving me the password and 2FA.

I include the domain in the monthly price and let them know they own it despite it being under my name.

WPMUDEV is working on a way for you to allow clients to buy domains THROUGH the hub!!

    Hello Butterflyly !

    Hope you’re doing well today!

Sounds like a great idea actually and a nice thing to have. And it should be fairly easy to do technically as well as the expiration is visible on WHOIS searches. I’ll make a task for this so our Hub team can consider adding this as a feature :) BTW thank you for the User Stories, absolutely perfect! :)

And as Wonderboy mentioned, we’re planning to become a domain resellers ourselves so this will be actually possible in the upcoming future for domains are handled by us.

    Best regards,
    Pawel

Hi Pawel , as long as we can purchase domains at good prices (as resellers) to match for example porkbun and others that sell and renew domains on the cheap I will move all our domains immediately to WPMUDEV. I have a lot in my domain reseller account. :grinning:

Having control of the domain on a reseller account saves a lot of time and I get notified when a domain is going to expire. As soon as a client asks us to do anything web related then we automatically offer hosting and domain transfer.

    Thank you Pawel !

Wonderboy Thank you for the suggestion, many of our clients are lower mid market businesses and nonprofits and would not want a marketing agency to hold their domain registration. For our smaller clients we absolutely do hold registration in many cases and we’re looking forward to WPMUDev offering this.

Wonderboy Feel free to reach out via butterflyly.com and we can do some networking around your nonprofit ideas.
