[Need advice] Setting up GA4 for Multisite, for semi-enterprise website

GA4 is replacing UA very soon.

Setting up single site of GA4 is straight forward, however I need advice in terms of WordPress Multisite and configuring for GA4 as a whole (xxxx.com) and all subsites (xxxx.com/A, xxxx.com/B, xxxx.com/C……..etc)

Few important notes that I need advice:

1. In previous UA, I do have different property for main site (xxxx.com) and all subsites (xxxx.com/A, xxxx.com/B…..). Do I need to create different GA4 properties for each subsites?

2. Any example to capture “custom events” such as enquiry forms that appear at different places, different conditions over website (main site + subsites)? Particularly I have a enquiry form at 80% of the pages where the form embed as top footer widget. How I can track the form being submitted from which page?

3. How to define funnel (example visitor landed at Page A, then go to Page B, Page Z, Page D……. and exit at Page F)?

Any other tips regarding Multisite and GA4 as references?

Setting up GA4 will not be very different than UA so most of the options will be the same.

1. Yes you will need to do that however if you use beehive on network admin use can have all the sites data on your main site property but we don’t recommend doing that, there are a few ways to connect the sites to google analytics:

A: connect using a single account API (Connect with Google), https://wpmudev.com/docs/wpmu-dev-plugins/beehive/#connect-with-google

B: connect using custom project API, https://wpmudev.com/docs/wpmu-dev-plugins/beehive/#set-up-api-project

Both have their own benefits if you have less than 50 subsites we suggest using connect with google since it will be easier otherwise you may use custom project API, you can find more information about how to setup beehive for multiple in this doc:

2. For form submission events you will need to use a code snippet to make it work you can take a look at this tread to learn more: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/forminator-and-events-to-track-in-google-analytics/

Also, you can use tag manager to track that event: https://wpmudev.com/blog/google-tag-manager/

3. Funnels are usually created automatically by google analytics itself you don’t need to do anything special, you can take a look at this doc to learn more:https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9327974?hl=en

Yes, you will need to create a property for each site since the URLs will be different and you need to select each one on beehive settings on each subsite.
