Any Etsy Examples Yet?

I once started to put together an “etsy-like’ shop and realized how much work it was going to be so stopped. Just wondering if there are any users out there or from the DEVS that they have seen where someone actually used the market themes and marketpress provided here to create an Etsy-like shop with Chained Payments????

I guess I just need to motivation to keep pushing through.

http://teatra.de – ours is up and running quite well too. We use chained payments with PayPal and take 6% of each sale. We intend on getting Pro Sites up and running to allow sellers to setup a more stand-alone shop for a higher monthly fee but no sales commission (while still allowing their products to be listed in the main marketplace).

Because Fondeli and I are using multisite, we are both giving the freedom to the sellers to setup their own site and theme it the way they want. If you want something Etsy-like, where the themeing is the same throughout, that is certainly possible using MarketPress and multisite. You could use the New Blog Template plugin to ensure every new store gets the same look and feel and then restrict access to different themes for your sellers.

While we’ve been free with letting our sellers setup the look and feel of their own stores, I do think it has negatively impacted sales. They are not skilled at e-commerce design and the result is more ad-hoc stores instead of clean-looking stores. There benefit is that sellers have a look and site they want, but at the cost of sales. However, I intend to roll-out a new service for custom store/theme setup inclusive of professionally developed themes and customization to bring in another source of revenue for myself.

Lots of different ways to approach this, but MarketPress is an awesome plugin. While there is still work to be done on it, none of the other WordPress e-commerce plugins offer multisite capability. Aaron and the WPMU DEV guys have done a great job in getting MarketPress put together and ready.

Hi Kokabella and welcome to WPMU DEV!

Here’s a store theme that’s very much similar to Fonedelifair:

@katypurviance, you’re right, users are taken to the respective sites on the network selling the items, though you could potentially block access to theme menus so that users couldn’t change themes, then setup a standardized theme across sites that would pull in the same data as the main site, to yield a sort of Etsy-like experience that way.

It’d basically just take some theme and possibly other slight customizations.

I was hoping that would be the case. I joined WPMU primarily for this theme and the shopping cart as the tutorials made customizing the theme look easy. I’m not finding that to be the case however as the tutorial was outdated (Siobhan has addressed this part). I’m not giving up quite yet though. This is a great community so I’m hoping it all works out. I just thought I’d have my store up and running by now.

For anyone interested I’m working on an etsy/social networking site using marketpress-

at the moment I’m still working on it and tweaking things. The marketpress is working pretty nicely, except for a global search. It can globally search and show products from all sites, but the display of the search results could use some help. Trying to find a way to fix that up but not having a lot of luck so far.
