Can I upsell business directry ads or listings?

Hello,

I want to use the business directory as an upsell feature.

I would like to upsell different levels of featured listings for site member.

How an I do this with the business director?

Thank you,

Chris

You would also use the membership plugin and allow access to different features for different membership levels.

    Example –

    Free – basic

    10/month – 1 listing

50/month unlimited listings with no ads etc.

This will make sense and you will be able to see the different ways to make money once you have the membership plugin installed.

Feel free to write back. I am happy to brainstorm with you.

    Hi Chris,

I hope you are well today and thanks for your question.

You could use the membership plugin like @Dylan Elmgreen mentioned, but currently they don’t have any direct integration so it may require custom coding to actually enforce those limits.

Or did you mean upsell upgrades for directory listings, like a featured listing for example?

    Thank you!

    Kind Regards

    Jack.

    Hey Jack and Dylan,

I’m using s2Member for member management.

I own and have used s2member Pro, WIshList, DAP and of course the WPMU DEV membership plugin.

For this site (and most sites) I prefer to work with s2Member for subscriptions, user levels and user level realted access control (and the s2Member payment gateway choices are the final killer for the other options. I like PayPal Pro!).

Back to the topic at hand

Yes Jack, I want to sell different levels of business directory listings such as standard, featured, image ad, premium (both featured and image), etc.

There is a fairly good business directory plugin out there that allows N level upgrades and pricing, but I don’t like to mix so many plugins if I can avoid it.

And I really prefer to go to fewer sources for resolutions to issues (i.e. it is really nice to go to WPMU DEV for answers, all in one place, for the many WPMU DEV plugins I can use).

    Thank you,

    Chris

    Hi there Chris,

Thanks for the additional info and it sounds like it would make a great addition to the plugin, currently, it’s not possible, as a directory listing is a listing if that makes sense?

If you was for example using our membership, you maybe able to use some of the hooks from that to process upgrades for this, but I’m still unsure if that would actually work.

Does S2member, include any custom hooks/actions you can use to limit pieces of code?

    Thank you!

    Kind Regards

    Jack.

    Hey guys,

    Thanks for the input.

I’m one of the weirdos who likes to get sites built and use them rather than live in the code trying to cobble things together every day to TRY to use the sites

I understand and occasionally use wp-config and functions files, as well as CSS modifications (in child themes!) to get things done. And I know hooks are there to extend WordPress, theme and plugin functionality–but I strongly dislike learning about random fixes to get things done

I prefer to research and find the plugins that do what I need to do and then use them as they are. The benefit here is a quick out of the box setup with plugin updates that fix future problems.

The alternative is learning, testing and using functions, hooks, actions, filters, etc which can change in any upgrade and blow up the site and I don’t know what caused it! To reliably use these wonderful and amazing core and surface level changes one needs to have a comprehensive, broad and deep understanding of the entire WordPress platform, framework, MySQL databases, all of PHP and all of the MySQL languages–as well as their relationships within the WordPress context.

Or go buy a plugin and annual updates for $ 50.

WordPress is built and managed by thousands of experts who blow things up unwittingly from time to time.

Me? I’m a mere mortal who can hack code if I can find the answers on Google. But next month, when something totally unrelated blows up, I’d never know how to fix it.

So I’m one of those who looks for out of the box solutions backed by the pros

I know I need to revise plans and from time to time make compromises, but most of the time I get what I need.

And in this case, I opted to go with the Sabai directory which is robust and robustly supported. And importantly–it does what I need it to do, out of thebox… today.

    Thank you guys!

    Warmest,

    Chris

    Hi there Chris,

I hope you are well today, sorry about the delay on this here, I missed your reply.

Thank you for your feedback it is certainly appreciated, We’d love to hear any ideas from both you and @nelnehal that you think would improve the directory plugin?

Hope your both having a great weekend, thank you for being WPMU DEV members!

    Kind Regards

    Hi Jack-

I’m considering going with Sabai Directory as well, instead of the WPMUdev Directory plugin, because I need Featured Listings. I believe that’s what Chris was referring to that would improve the Directory plugin — the ability to offer different levels of listings for different prices.

For my purposes, I just need a Free level and a Paid level. We want to offer Free “Basic” listings to our members (we use the Membership 2 Pro plugin), but then we want to offer a Paid “Featured” upgrade where the member can pay extra to have their Directory listing appear at the top of their category list and search results, as well as having a different color background or border on the results page so the listing still stands out even when the results are sorted in any other order.

In short, any business that’s willing to pay more will get better placement in the results and a “flashier” appearance in the results, so they stand out above the other listings. It’s a common feature of every other Directory plugin I’ve considered, and there have been several requests for this feature here in the forums over the last several years.

Yet in reading the staff’s responses to the many requests, it seems like they’ve never even heard of the concept of Featured Listings, or like they just don’t understand exactly what we’re asking for.

Like Chris, I would love to be able to keep all my plugin sources as tight as possible so I don’t have to go a dozen different places to get support. I’m already using the Membership 2 Pro, Events+, eNewsletter, Snapshot Pro, Infinite SEO, and Integrate Video Tutorials for this site. I really wanted to be able to use WPMUdev’s Directory plugin as well.

    Hi there @Veronica J. Kirchoff,

Hope you’re well today! Definitely, I agree that featured listings is something that’s needed within the plugin and I know myself how much of a feature this is across different listings site and a few years ago even eBay had the featured listing functionality.

We’ll be looking into it for a future version, as we’ll be looking at re-writing the directory plugin.

    Thank you!

    Kind Regards

    Jack.
