Confused by Events+ And Categories

Hi there – I’m a bit confused so maybe this will be an easy one as I’m not the sharpest tool in the box…

On Events+ there is the possibility to create and add categories at the back end. But this doesn’t seem to work for the front end event posting. There’s no place to choose a particular category of event – should there be?

Also is it possible to search for all events of a particular category – the same way it would be for a post category? If so what would the format of the URL be – e.g. example.com/events/category/sale etc?

Hi, I’m not sure if you are talking about displaying categories on front end or using the front page editing add-on. I’ll tackle the first one for the moment since it’s the easier one.

Here’s the basic sequence you need to follow for displaying events on the front end.

    1. Events >> Event Categories >> Add new category

    2. Events >> Add new Event (Make sure to select a category for this event)

    3. Appearance >> Widgets >> place “Upcoming Events” widget in sidebar of choice

    4. Inside the Upcoming Events widget, select an Event Category or use the default Any

After you do that, go refresh any page where the Upcoming Events widget will display.

The default URL for a single event is the following:

    example.com/events/startyear/startmonth/eventname

There’s probably a way to add the category into that structure but I am not sure how. Seems like it wouldn’t be hard to do. Someone else can chime in on that.

Let me know if this is what you needed or whether you were talking about the front page editing add on.

Wait. My bad. That didn’t answer your question because categories don’t show in the widget or the event listing.

Let me take another look at this. The way the plug-in creates entries revolves around the event date (makes sense) but you’re right, it doesn’t appear to include event categories very well.

Okay, gotcha. I went and took a look at the front-end editor issue as well and came to the conclusion that the reason you can’t see categories there is the same reason you don’t see them other places. Categories seem to have been entirely left out on the front end for reasons I don’t understand. Apparently they are only useful for organizing in the back end. I hope support staff and or developers will come in and enlighten us because I’m looking forward to using this plug-in myself.

PS – It looks like you have a membership plug-in turned on. I couldn’t access any content on the link you provided. You might want to change permissions so the support staff can inspect what you have.

    Hi @iamstaggered

Great topic & just like Mark @mark77210 I had fun reading through it. Had to smile

The ability to add a category type for an event in the front end has not yet been implemented by the Developer, although it’s something that he is considering to add in an upcoming release. I refer to this topic:

    https://wpmudev.com/forums/topic/missing-features-on-events-plugin-update#post-194921

I will move this topic to the Feature and Feedback section of the Community (hope you don’t have objections  ) and will notify the Developer @VeBailovity that there’s more interest in this.

    Have a good weekend!
