general question on site changes I am contemplating

I have a multi-site, with pro on the main site, membership on 4 of the main sites, and all of these main sites(6) have unique domains mapped onto them. I have multiple member sites on the system, all with their own mapped domains.

I want to change the mapped domain and emails on all 6 of the main sites.

So, if I leave the existing multi site domain the same, can I re-map the other 6? I have changed domains on individual sites before. Is it possible to change the mapped domains on these main sites in a similar fashion?

Of course, I would deactivate the pro and membership plugins during this process, but, what other steps would I need to take and in what order?

And then after this is done, I would want to redirect the old domains to their corresponding “new” domains.

Thanks in advance for your help! Linda @iempoweru

Hey there, Linda! Hope you’re having a great week!

Let me make sure we’re both on the same page — do you have one network, with several sites, or do you have sub-networks in your primary network?

If it’s the first option, I’d do the following:

    1. Take a full backup of the site folders and database.

    2. Disable all plugins and all but the active theme.

    3. Map your new domains.

    4. Test everything.

    5. Turn plugins back on.

    6. Test everything again.

Essentially, if I’m understanding you correctly, you’re just re-mapping your sub-domains to a new URL, right?

    Hope this helps!

Ok, I have 1 network, with sub-sites, so your instructions apply to this I believe.

I want to retain the original starting domain as the network admin domain.

Then I have the 6 core sites and will be changing the domains on these. Because I am retaining the original domain, these changes should not affect the other sub-sites I have on the network.

    Double check my logic.

I think I should be able to change each domain/site one at a time. Then I will follow your instructions.

Wish me luck! And thanks for your help! Linda @iempoweru
