Images are not loading from Smush CDN

Some images don’t load on my site. I can see ‘the server responded with a status of 429’ errors on the browser console.

This topic was created by Sharif on my behalf. From multiple websites of mine, the images are offloaded to the Smush CDN. Now, occasionally, the images won’t load due to a variety of errors. One of this can be a 429, “Too Many Requests”, but also a 503, stating “back-end fetch failed” (see screenshot).

Those errors are not just for me or my IP address, but for all website visitors, as I have multiple reports.

    Hi Thierry ,

Tickets that are created from chat include just some of the basic information in the ticket itself, further information relevant for support is provided in the private notes so don’t worry that you don’t see all the info in the ticket itself

This has been passed over to our devs to check it out further and we’re going to share further information here after they have investigated it.

    Best regards,
    Predrag

    Hello Thierry

I see now that images are loading with no issue. Keep in mind that distributing content to the CDN may take some time when activated for first time.

Let us know if your issue is resolved so we can provide you more help. :nerd:

    Kind regards,
    Alessandro.

    Hi Alessandro ,

Unfortunately, they are not. For example:
    https://826149.smushcdn.com/1642952/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/11m3-container-logo-2048×944.png?lossy=1&strip=1&webp=1

I am getting either a blank page or a 503 error (back-end fetch failed) when visiting the image directly, with an 429 error in the console on the web page where I would like to load the image.

Furthermore, on another website, not even a single image was able to load when I had the CDN activated.

    Hi Thierry ,

Just to be sure that we’re checking the right page, the images that are having issues can be seen on hi****is.nl/winkel/ store page when CDN is enabled, is that correct?

It seems that the support access has expired so could you please grant it again for that site?
You can enable support access from WPMU DEV > Support > Support Access panel in your WP admin.
You can find more details about granting support access here:
    https://wpmudev.com/docs/getting-started/getting-support/#chapter-5

Please respond in this ticket once access is granted.

    Best regards,
    Predrag

    Hello Thierry

Your website is under CloudFlare’s mechanisms. Please consider setting Under Attack Mode to Essentially off (Challenges only the most grievous offenders).

Your images must be publicly accessible.

Give it a try and let us know if you need further assistance.

    Kind regards,
    Alessandro.

    Hi there,

I’ve tried it again on afval….nl. Unfortunately, images still are not loading.

Cloudflare DDOS protection — or “Under Attack Mode” — is disabled, however we’re posing a JS challenge to users outside a specific European region, with exceptions for the WPMUDEV user agent and known crawlers.

      Hey

I still get “Checking your browser before accessing afval*****.nl.” message. You must keep this off as long as you are using Smush CDN. Otherwise, our servers won’t have access to your images.

Also keep in mind that it may take some time for CDN to fetch your content.

Let us know if disabling “Under Attack Mode” throws any 503 errors.

      Kind regards,
      Alessandro.

    Hi Alessandro,

Once again: “Under Attack Mode” was disabled all the time. We now understand how the CDN works; every time we enabled the CDN, servers with an ASN owned by DigitalOcean would show up as flagged in our custom firewall rules. So, we added that ASN as an exception and know the images are slowly uploading to the CDN again — as supposed. So, adding the DigitalOcean CDN — probably the infrastructure provided of the Smush CDN — ASN did the trick.

Case resolved, I guess. Thank you all for your quick and adequate responses through this forum and live chat. Highly appreciated.
