importing blog page/posts using WordPress importer

Hi, I have just transferred my website from my test site to my new site.

Everything works okay so far, but when I try and import my blog page and posts.

I get a white screen and then locked out, I had this issue on my test as well as my new site.

This was with two different hosts, it seems to be a WordPress issue.

I have tried to add debug code to wp-config.php file, but it keeps displaying errors fatal error.

I would appreciate any help as I have been trying to fix this issue for a few days with no success.

Thanks

Andrew

    Hello Andrew,

I hope you’re well today and thank you for your question!

You mentioned that you transferred the site. Can you please explain how did you do it?

Usually when the site is transferred from one host to another (and/or domain) it does carry all the content so I’d just like to understand that case better.

Let me also know how many posts and pages are there to be imported. Finally, does the import break the site completely so you need to e.g. re-install it or just throws errors but you can then access wp-admin as always?

    Please advise!

    Best regards,

    Adam

    Hi

I transferred my site using FTP, and when I click on import link within the admin area.

After a few seconds, the screen goes blank and I have to re-install the site again.

    I have about 10 to 12 posts.

I have created the XML files ready to be imported into the site, for some reason WordPress does not like it.

I just click the import link under tools and WordPress heading and after a few seconds the screen goes white and lock me out.

    Thanks for any help.

    Hello Andrew!

I transferred my site using FTP,

Haven’t you transfered the site database as well? This is a usual practice and it shouldn’t require you to import any posts/pages from the XML file because database contains it. I admit I’m kind of confused.

Could you please also share that exported XML file with me so I could take a look at it and check it on my test setup? The best way would be to ZIP it and upload to any file storage service and share a link to it with me here. I may make this thread internal if you wish me to so nobody except you and WPMU DEV staff would be able to access. it.

    Best regards,

    Adam

    Hi

I have moved my New WordPress website from my test site to my new site.

Of course the database was moved as well other wise the website would throw up a whole load of errors.

The issue is when I use the import tool the website crashes in seconds.

The XML file is used to move the blog page and posts from my old site to the new one.

The XML file is not the issue.

Just by clicking the import link the site crashes in seconds.

The best thing is to send a screen shot of where it crashes.

I have just attached screen shot.

Please let me know if you do not understand what I am saying.

    Thanks

    Kind Regards

    Andrew

    Hello Andrew

Hope you are well today and won’t mind me chiming here.

You are saying that the link which you’ve pointed in your last screenshot, if you click on it, site gets crashed. right ? If so, that means you are not able to import or select any XML file for import operation. Would you please grant us staff access to your site so that I can check in depth regarding your issue. ? You can grant me staff access to your site via WPMU DEV > Support > Support Access > Grant Access

Please let me know once you do that.

    Best Regards,

    Milan

    Hello Andrew!

I’m sorry if you got the impression that I don’t understand your question. I was just trying to get to the bottom of the problem and I had my reasons for asking this. I apologize if this brought you to confusion and wasted your time, that wasn’t my intention.

Getting back to the issue. I did check your site and I can see what the import tool is causing. The site indeed went blank once I only tried to run it. Unfortunately, it didn’t report any warnings/errors, neither in dashboard nor in browser’s console.

The browser however returned the 500 error which is an internal server error.

You mentioned before that WP debug returns just a fatal error. Was there any additional explanation? It usually include some additional description string so this would be helpful.

At this point, the next step would be to disable all the plugins and then enable them one by one. To do this please access your site install via FTP and:

    – go to /wp-content/ folder

    – rename /plugins/ folder to /plugins_off/

    – try accessing the dashboard again and you should be able to, all the plugins should be automatically disabled

    – then rename the /plugins_off/ folder back to /plugins/ and try enabling the plugins one by one; see if at any point site goes blank even without attempting to use import tool

    If it does not break:

    – disable all the plugins again except WordPress Importer

    – enable them back “one by one” this time each time trying to run Importer again

This way we should find out what’s causing this or at least eliminate potential plugin conflict.

Let me know about results of these tests.

    Best regards,

    Adam

    Hi Adam

I do appreciate you have to ask a lot of questions.

Thank you so much for solving my problem.

The first plugin I tested was the one causing all the issues Beaver Builder lite.

    Thanks

    Kind Regards
