[Other] WP Ultimo plugin now defunct – alternatives?

Hi,

It has come to our attention that the WP Ultimo plugin that we’re using to manage our WaaS networks is no longer being developed or supported. The WP Ultimo website is down and no-one seems to be responding to emails.

Obviously we’re aware that this is not your fault or your problem, but we were wondering whether you might be able to suggest an alternative plugin that offers similar functionality? We’re struggling to find any that are actively maintained.

    Hope you are doing well!

    I’m sorry to hear about WP Ultimo’s current situation, it has been a popular choice for managing WaaS networks.

    I did a check for the plugin to be sure if it is shutdown or not, and so far it seems that their site is still up and running and appears to be working still.
    However, there have been reports of users experiencing difficulties in reaching their support team and concerns about the plugin’s development status.
    Finding a well-maintained alternative with similar functionality can be challenging, but here are a few options below to consider, however, please bear in mind that we are not responsible for any external plugin or so.

    That said, if your site runs on cPanel, or on some hosting provider that runs WordPress Multisites in cPanel I would suggest Multisite Toolkit for managing your multisites; Also, Ultimate Membership Pro, it is a versatile membership plugin that can integrate with multisites to provide subscription-based access, and it’s main features have Payment gateways, membership tiers, and restrictions. Also, Customizable login, registration, and more.

    That said, WP Ultimo is really a one of kind plugin that has been around for quite sometime now, and I don’t really think it is getting shut anytime soon, however, I suspect that you are probably mixing between WP Ultimo, and Ultimo WP.

    However, Ultimo WP has stopped support and probably shutting down:

    Therefore, I would highly suggest that you check and probably try to contact the plugin support and be clear on what are their plans before transiting to any other tools.

    Also, if your site(s) are down, please share with us and let us know the site urls and if they are hosted with us and we can check the cause of the downtime so we can get to the bottom of the causing plugin/theme and be clear about WP Ultimo side as well.

    Hi,

    Thanks very much for your swift and detailed response. We became concerned earlier this week after we noticed that the wpultimo.com site was down, and it had remained so for several days. Although it does appear to have been fixed today, so perhaps it was just a temporary hosting issue.

    Also, we had noticed that the plugin itself hadn’t been updated at all in over a year (last update, 5th December 2023). And we found a number of mentions in various places that customers had been experiencing problems contacting their support email addresses.

    The combination of the above led us to worry that the plugin might no longer be maintained, which would be quite a serious problem for us as we rely on it. However, as you suggest we will try to contact WP Ultimo themselves and see if we can get a clarification as to whether it is still in active development and supported. If not then we’ll investigate the alternatives you suggested.

        Hi Peter,

        Thanks for the heads-up. I did try contacting WP Ultimo directly, but received no response — which wasn’t really a surprise.

        We had discussed creating our own fork of the plugin, but it makes sense to make use of this community project rather than go our own way. We’ll take a look.

    I can confirm the WP Ultimo website has been shot down, and they no longer have a premium version, however as mentioned above they are still developing plugins and releasing new updates for the main plugin.

    If you are looking for a premium alternative you can consider using one of the following plugins:

    WP Frontend Admin
MainWP
iThemes Sync

    At this point, we don’t have any recommendations and you should test them on your own or use other user reviews to find the best platform/plugin.

    I see it is a fatal error

    Composer detected issues in your platform: Your Composer dependencies require a PHP version “>= 8.1.0”.

    Some error with the composer; it seems that they are updating themes or packages, which might be a good thing to see; it means that they are working on something.

    As for WPMU DEV, we don’t have plans to bring back a similar project, but I believe the Reseller is a nice approach https://wpmudev.com/reseller/ as possible WP Ultimo (and Multisite ) replacement.

    Here’s the best alternative to WP Ultimo — it’s a stable and actively maintained fork:

    It’s currently being supported and developed, and I even received direct help from the new developer. That was a game changer for me — thanks to him, I’m finally able to continue working on my multisite business without issues. Updated in 2025!
