Settings > Permalink Menu and Ultimate Branding

As described in this thread, I had issues with the Permalink Menu visibility related to Ultimate Branding.

I have all current software installed as of this date. Somehow the Settings > Permalinks menu item disappeared, and as reported by @caucus the Ultimate Branding Permalinks menu showed “The Permalinks menu item is hidden”. OK, but there’s no option anywhere to UnHide it.

I confess I probably did hide that menu, thinking it might appear in subsites – but I’m not sure about either of those points.

Rather than installing another plugin to unhide the menu item, I deactivated Ultimate Branding and the Permalinks menu item came back.

I set the permalinks as preferred and saved.

I re-activated Ultimate Branding – the Permalinks menu item remained.

Unfortunately at this point all other settings for Ultimate Branding were gone, except it still showed “The Permalinks menu item is hidden.”

I’ll have to look this up but I didn’t think deactivating a plugin like this would completely remove all of its configuration settings. And I don’t believe there is a way to selectively backup settings for one app so that they can be restored later. Oy….. Glad this isn’t a live site.

WPMU DEV – can this be regarded as one or more bugs?

Thanks.

    Hi @Tony,

I hope had been good today!

I have all current software installed as of this date. Somehow the Settings > Permalinks menu item disappeared, and as reported by @caucus the Ultimate Branding Permalinks menu showed “The Permalinks menu item is hidden”. OK, but there’s no option anywhere to UnHide it.

To unhide the Permalinks menu, you need to disable the module in Branding -> Dashboard.

I tested this procedure in my install and I was unable to reproduce your issue. When I disable the module “Remove Permalinks Menu Item”, the permalinks menu shows again.

Are you using any cache plugin? If yes can you disable it temporarily and try this procedure again?

I confess I probably did hide that menu, thinking it might appear in subsites – but I’m not sure about either of those points.

Enabling this module will remove the Permalinks menu item in all of your subsites.

I re-activated Ultimate Branding – the Permalinks menu item remained.

Unfortunately at this point all other settings for Ultimate Branding were gone, except it still showed “The Permalinks menu item is hidden.”

This is a strange issue, because it’s not supposed and I can’t reproduce it too in my install. If you deactivate and active Ultimate Branding all the settings should remain the same, without loosing anything.

Can you give us access to your admin panel, so we can check your issue?

If you don’t already know, please, follow the link below, to see how enable the staff login:

When you enable this option, please post again!

    Cheers, Luís

To unhide the Permalinks menu, you need to disable the module in Branding -> Dashboard.

OK, thanks for the tip. That does work, but wow it’s non-intuitive. Once enabled, all (?) other modules provide a set of controls to toggled functionality. For this one the module enablement Is the functionality.

Enabling this module will remove the Permalinks menu item in all of your subsites.

That’s another ‘wow’. That means a change to that configuration means the functionality must be enabled network-wide for the time during which it’s being set by the super admin. That’s fragile. Granted, we should not be changing those settings once the site is established, but policies can change as sites evolve.

I don’t think it’s valid for any setting to affect network sites just because the network admin wants to change functionality at the network level.

If you deactivate and active Ultimate Branding all the settings should remain the same

It looks like the Admin Message setting remained but all others were gone. Or rather, the data was not displayed in their settings pages, which could have been a rendering issue and does not confirm that the data was actually cleared in the database.

I’d rather not open this developing site for support at the moment. I’m working on it aggressively and I need to keep moving. I’m just reporting a potential problem in case anyone else is stumbling in this area.

    Thanks Luís!
