    What is the NextGen gallery?

    NextGEN Gallery is a WordPress gallery plugin -> https://wordpress.org/plugins/nextgen-gallery/
    It has integration with Smush, so you will be able to Smush your images in that gallery as well.

    Do i need it?

    It depends only on you if you need or your client needs galleries on site.

    How can I convert my images to NextGen file format?

    If you will enable the Smush CDN feature, your images will be copied to our CDN and serve from there on your site. On our CDN side, we convert those your images to NextGen file format.
