SSL on DOMAIN MAPPING with WP multisite

Hi Guys,

Im running a wordpress multisite and would like to add SSL certificates (to show as HTTPS) to some of the websites in it (with DOMAIN MAPPING). I payed for certificates on ssls.com but I cant find any guide of how to connect the certificate to a mapped domain inside my network. The network has its own IP address ofcourse.

Please help.

Thanks.

    Hi Elad,

Once you have SSL installed for your domains it should start working with Domain Mapping as well, however this is not something that you configure from DM but rather on your host.

We have some extensive discussion here about setting up DM and SSL so I suggest checking it out:

    https://wpmudev.com/forums/topic/how-to-setup-ssl-for-mapped-domains

Or contact your hosting provider to install your SSL certificates.

    Best regards,

    Predrag

Hi Predrag, Thank you for your kind replay.

Im still not getting it. let me explain, Im running a server with cPanel on it.

I have a WP multisite installed on one of the domains. Inside the multisite I have 10+ websites which is using Domain Mapping plugin to make the website connect to clients domain name.

Those websites are not configured on the cPanel, The only domain created on the cPanel is my main WP multisite domain.

I can install SSL certificates on any domain that I want on my cPanel, I know that, Thats not the issue..

Those domains (inside my multisite) are not on my cPanel, they are only configured with Domain Mapping plugin on my multisite.

This is why I ask how can I install or connect an SSL certificates to those mapped domain.

I just cant understand the process..

I hope my question is clearer now.

    Thanks

    Hi Elad,

In order to map a domain you first need to point it to your dedicated IP address of your multisite/main domain.

Your dedicated IP should be pointing to your WordPress root folder, and then domains that you want to map should be pointing to that IP.

If Domain Mapping is not active, and above is configured, when you open domain that you want to map it should open your main site, so when you activate Domain Mapping plugin and map domain to a subsite it will do its thing and redirect mapped domain to correct subsite.

This doesn’t depend on SSL certificate and it should be configured that way in either case, in order to install SSL certificate properly it would be best to get in touch with your hosting provider to sort it out for you, as it’s not related directly to Domain Mapping plugin.

Hope this makes it more clear now

    Hey Elad ,

    Hope you’re well.

The domain mapping plugin doesn’t have any control over installing SSL certificate. I think that’s why Predrag trying to point you to your hosting. SSL is installing to the server so it should be done from the server side.

If your server support to install multiple SSL to one application (WordPress installation) you can use multiple SSL. But if it doesn’t support you should use multi-domain SSL certificates or SAN SSL certificate.

    I hope it helps!

    Cheers,

Hi, What exactly should I ask the Server support company?

“If my server support multiple SSL to one application (WordPress installation)?” They will understand what Im asking and give me a clear answer?

I know my server support SNI.

Please let me know the steps I need to complete to make the subsites works with HTTPS under my wp multisite.

    Thanks

      Hello Elad,

Did you ever get this figured out? I’m trying to do the same thing, with subfolders, not subdomains. Having all the same problems you seem to be having here. I’ve tried getting our host provider to figure it out and they don’t seem to understand what I’m asking for at all. Have you had any progress? I’d really appreciate hearing what you ended up doing, if so.

    Hi Elad,

With SNI you should be able to use a single wildcard certificate for your main domain and its subdomains, and add new certificate (separate for each one) for each mapped domain that you add (map) to any of the sub-sites.

It would be best to explain the setup your after to your host and they should suggest you what the best solution will be on their server.

So explain to them that you have multisite installed and that you map domains to subsite, and that you want to have SSL certificate installed for all the mapped domains.

    Best regards,
