WordPress Chat : Not showing that member are online on my friends list

OK so on my buddypress site I have the chat in the corner and that works great. However, on my friends list it has a problem of showing the people are actually online and letting me start a chat with them. For example I am having a conversation with a guy in the main page corner chat. But when I go to the members directory it says he is not online??? So I am unable to have a chat with him. Please help
