[Hummingbird Pro] I need to improve my mobile performance

Hello! I’ve been trying so many things to improve my mobile performance, but nothing seems to work properly. Is there any configuration of Hummingbird Pro that can help me with that? Or anything else you can do to help me? I’m loosing users because of that poor performance.

I hope you can help me.
Thanks.

    Hi Guilherme Candido .

Hope you are doing well and thank you for reaching out to us.

We checked your site and tried to run some performance test on PageSpeed Insights and from what we can see, there are opportunities that Hummingbird Pro’ Assets Optimization might help with like Removed Unused JS and CSS, Eliminate render-blocking resources.

First, just to give more detail about mobile performance, it is usual to have a lower score compared to the desktop score when testing as it tests the same site including all of the assets and files from the site but “treats” them like two separate “versions” and given 2 different scores. So it means even if it was loaded in mobile version, it still loads all the assets which were optimized for desktop version and just hides or adjust it to be mobile responsive and that also technically affects the mobile score.

The best way to address this is to use tools or themes that serves the site differently for mobile version which is tweaked to be optimized for that but given the fact that it needs more time setting up which might be complex or even sometimes not that completely possible as well as the additional cost it would add, sometimes it is not worth the hassle specially if the site responsive version works ok as well. The next best option is to do the opportunities suggested on the performance test recommendations and try to action those that can be actioned.

I personally tried to load your site on my mobile device and if you would ask me and if I am to be honest, it is loading just fine on my end. I didn’t experience any sluggish or any delays on your site on my mobile but still there are opportunities you can try to address though I am not really sure if it will still add a significant improvement.

What you can try to do now (if ever you still didn’t) is to try to configure the Assets Optimization more to possibly move assets to the footer to help with the opportunities mentioned above.

Just make sure you do it 1 to 3 at a time then checking the site every after enabling just to be sure as if this process if not done carefully can cause the site to break. Then just keep repeating the process until you configured all of the files that can be moved without breaking the site. Also to add, we suggest you do a complete site backup for more safety net before doing this.

As we currently don’t have any access for your site, we weren’t able to look into the setup of your Hummingbird Pro. If you still want us to check this after doing the Asset Optimization tweaks recommended above, please grant us temporary support access so we can give a closer look and see if we can find more things that can still be improved.

You can find detailed information about it here: https://wpmudev.com/docs/getting-started/getting-support/#enabling-support-access

Hope this helps and let us know if you need further clarification or assistance with this matter.

    Regards,
    Jasper

Jasper, thank you so much for your time and for all the information you passed me.

I understood everything you said and I’ll be glad to have your support to set up my Hummingbird Pro. I already follow the steps of the tutorial and gave you the access to my site through WPMU DEV Support.

    Best regards.

    Hi Guilherme Candido ,

Thank you for granting support access.

I checked how the plugin configuration but couldn’t find any option to optimise the Asset Files further to help with improving the score.

As we already mentioned, Mobile devices render a site differently. Also, there are assets, scripts, code etc., that are needed for desktop but not for mobile. As you are using the same site for desktop and mobile, there is no way to detect which things would load on which device. If you used a separate website for mobile devices or if you loaded assets and content conditionally (this would require a lot of custom code, you would have to customise your theme and plugins core files, too) targeting mobile devices, then you could control and optimise the site only for mobile devices.

I want to suggest you, please consider checking/replacing the plugins you have on your site or switching to a lighter theme.

Another option that would be good to try is Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP). It may not always be simple to configure because AMP strips down a lot off CSS and js to make the pages lighter, which can cause errors as you’d need to eliminate scripts that provide certain functionality. However, it can increase the page load time for mobile. Here’s a further guide on this: https://wpmudev.com/blog/getting-started-with-google-amp-in-wordpress-test-your-amp-pages-here/

Please let us know if you need any further clarification.

    Kind Regards,
